I am a Protestant trying to learn more about the Catholic faith.   Due to family by marriage, over the years I have attended many Catholic confirmations, baptisms, wedding, etc.   I always tried to see if I could actually follow the mass using the book provided.

However, now I would like to really understand what is going on.   I am impressed by the reverence / prayful attitude in the service, but I am sure that I am missing a lot because I do not understand the symbolism.    I have ready many of the topics on this forum and perused books in bookstores.    However most assume the reader understands the Catholic terms.

So my question.   If there a source that explains the usual mass, and common variations, for the non-Catholic?

PS - This web-site has been a great source to understanding other Catholic teachings.

Hi Jean,  Two things that I think are very clear and are not too time-consuming are the online document, "A Very Simple Guide to the Catholic Mass," at http://www.grigaitis.net/?doc=articles/guide.html

And the beautiful video:  "Reflections on the Mass" which you can get at a Catholic book store or you can order from http://www.aquinasandmore.com or  http://www.ignatius.com

Hope that helps,

Lee

Hi Jean, one of the first books I bought was "Catholicism for Dummies" and I would open the section on the mass and follow along with the mass on EWTN.  Also, you can get a monthly copy of the "Magnificat" which has a section on the mass with Latin and English.  It also has a daily schedule of readings and prayer used in mass.  It can be daunting at first!  It took me some time to figure it out, but I'm a bit of a slow learner!

Hello Jean, We're glad to have you with us!

Several months ago Cajun Rick made a list of Catholic Terms that I think would be very good to help you (I went to find the thread and for some reason could not find it, hopefully Rick will come soon and help us with the thread)

I understand why you would ask about the terms used by Catholics because I too struggled to understand explainations/ books, catholic material before I learned the terminology used.  Here is a link to an online catholic dictionary that I still find helpful.  http://www.therealpresence.org/dictionary/adict.htm

I hope this helps somewhat and I'm certain others will be along soon to answer your questions better than I.

God Bless and welcome to our forum, It's a great place to learn and all sincere questions are very welcome to anyone interested in learning our faith.

Betty

Could you be referring to the lists I linked in this thread?  It's posted as a sticky at the top of the RCIA forum.

I didn't compile the lists, though.  The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops did.  I did point out a few errors which were revised, but my input was not significant.

Hi Jean,

I have found the book "The How-To Book of the Mass" by Michael Dubruiel interesting and informative. I don't remember where I got it but Amazon.com seems to have almost everything so you might look there.

Rick that was exactly correct, I'd forgotten about the additional online list from the catechism too.

Jean, If you click on Ricks link in his post it'll take you to the listing of all catholic terminology or most anyway.  I still find an occaisional term used by a person that's most likely in the generation ahead of mine that I have to ask the meaning and they'll normally have learned it from a sister in catholic school when they were young.

Hope these help, we're happy to have you here to visit.

Betty
