This weekend while on vacation we attended a small church near Williamsburg, VA. The mass seemed pretty normal, as well as we could tell, as we were seated in the entryway, along with about 75 others.
But the curious thing was that before each reading, except the Gospel, the Priest stood and gave a brief explanation of the reading including the time frame and the circumstances of when the scripture was written. I've been a member of 5 different Catholic Churches and visited many others, but I've never heard that before! Has anyone else ever heard a Priest do this?

I have. Although my pastor doesn't do it, my bishop does. It is permitted (but not required) under the rubrics.
