In response to a decision by the Vatican, the U. S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has informed all bishops in the United States that the indult (special permission) granted to Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion to purify the vessels used in Holy Communion will not be renewed.

Only a priest, deacon, or instituted acolyte is permitted to purify the vessels under the current regulations.

In addition, the new rule now in effect in the United States seems to require that any remaining Precious Blood be consumed only by a priest, deacon, or instituted acolyte, except that an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion serving as a Minister of the Cup may consume the Precious Blood remaining in the cup from which he/she distributed the precious blood.

The requirements now state that the vessels be purified after Holy Communion by the priest, deacon, or instituted acolyte, or if that would unduly prolong the mass, the vessels may be purified immediately after mass.

A copy of the regulations is attached to this message.

I mentioned this to a fellow server last Sunday. His response was, "That will never happen here." If this change is left up to the bishop in my area, I am sure my friend is correct. We have more churches than we have priests in this area so we have priests running every-which-way on Sundays. My parish alone has 5 masses each weekend and 3 masses on Holy Days of Obligation. In addition to this, we have a K-8 school and 3 hospitals in the area including one of our own, St. Mary's Regional Medical Center. We have some kids studying but it will still be several years before they finish and our priests can get a little relief of some of the pressure.

On the other hand of course, we will serve as we are told. :)
