I do not remember crossing myself before giving the peace to my brothers and sisters in my younger years. I do not know when this practice began in my parish or has it always been part of the mass?

To the best of my recollection, the only time the liturgy calls for us to cross ourselves is at the beginning and end of mass, and at the beginning of the gospel.  Others do it at various times, but few can give a reason why.  They do it mostly because they were told to do it as children.

In my area it is common to make the sign of the cross after receiving the host and before consuming it.  Some will actually touch themselves with the host as they make the sign of the cross which, of course, is totally inappropriate.

I've seen a lot of people crossing themselves after the penitential rite, when the priest says

"May Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to everlasting life."

I've heard that it was at this point, or something similar, in the TLM that the laity did cross themselves.  I don't know if that's true though.

This is one of the abuses particular to receiving in the hand.
