In my church, during the collection, 2 Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion prepare the altar by bringing up the chalices, altar cloths, etc.  Is this ok or is it going against the rubricks of the Mass?  When my brother would visit, prior to his ordination to the priesthood, he asked me how long they have been doing that?  I got the impression that he thought that was against the rubricks, but I could have misread him.  My brother holds very true to the rubricks, traditions and is very much, what you might consider a "conservative priest".  Although, I don't really think the qualifier "conservative" is necessary since really he is just following church teaching - since when did following Church law become "conservative"? We are just doing what we are told... But I digress :P

Back to my question...is it ok for lay ministers to prepare the altar prior to the celebration of the Eucharist?

To the best of my knowledge, it's fine.  Inmy parish the altar servers do it.  There is no longer any restriction on who may touch the sacred vessels.  (When I was young, only those whose hands were consecrated by a bishop were permitted to touch the sacred vessels, even when they were empty, and only an ordained minister could touch them if they contained the Blessed Sacrament.)
