I've seen exactly ONE Ash Wednesday mass in my life, and I can't remember much that happened. I've been asked to play for the 8:00 AM, and I need to know if there's a Gloria or not, and is there NOT the sung alleluiah? Then I read on one church site that there is no entrance hymn . . . Can someone here give me an outline of what is happening at this mass? I assume the Eucharist section is the same as usual - right?
What book contains all this information? I'd like to order it so I don't have to run into this problem again.
Thanks!

The Sacramentary says that the Penitential Rite and the Gloria are omitted. The Alleluia is omitted as well during Lent.

Bonnie, it is a normal Lenten mass except for the distribution of ashes.
The Gloria is never said or sung during Lent, and the word "Alleluia" is not used in the Verse before the Gospel or elsewhere in the liturgy.
There are no restrictions on the use of an opening or closing song, but some parishes choose to enter and/or leave in silence.
Any missal or missalette should contain these restrictions. For example, mine says before the Gloria: The Gloria is not said or sung during Lent.
The book which actually contains all of the mass instructions is the Roman Missal, used by the priest on the altar. The rubrics are contained in the General Instructions of the Roman Missal (GIRM), while specific instructions are included in their proper place in the liturgy. A common missal is a reprint of the Roman Missal. Just make sure it has the instructions printed in the Liturgy. The GIRM is readily available on the Internet such as at the USCCB web site. Don't spent a lot; the Roman Missal is being revised at this time, and a new edition could be out as early as next year.

Thank you both.
Rick - thanks for the advice on the upcoming revision. I think I will wait.
