Now that I have seen what a Tridentine Latin Mass is, as compared to the Ordinary Mass, I understand a little why Vatican II came about.  As I understand it, for centuries people attended mass without hearing the scriptures read in their own language.  There were few Bibles and many people couldn't read anyway.  There were no complete catechisms printed in the language of the local people.  They were totally dependent on the local priests and religious to teach them by oral tradition.  Do I have this right?  Mass media was non-existent.  Superstition was rampant in the middle ages.  I am astonished that the Catholic Church is still in existence, except, God has guided her through the ages, with bad Popes and poor education.  What a debt of gratitude we owe to those who gave their lives by persecution, who memorized scripture and hid Bibles to prevent their destruction.  I'm happy to have a choice of attending a beautiful Latin mass and soaking in the liturgy there and imagining the hundreds of thousands who witnessed it before me.  Or attending an Ordinary Mass, just as beautiful in it's simplicity and being able to understand the scriptures and the prayers.  Praise God!

God's peace.  In a way, one can be happy that the Reformation took place; the result was that the Church really got a wake-up call to get its act together. But at what a cost!  Look at all the waste, the bloodshed, the confusion!

The mere fact of the uninterrupted existence of the Catholic Church is proof to me that God is truly with us. Without his loving intervention and guidance, we would never have survived.  Blessings, ~Br_Carlo~.

That comment reminds me of some writings I have read from a protestant church writer. The person writing stated that God had never left His people without a guide to help them in their lives and in spreading the Word. I saw that comment as a self-condemning comment since her church was started in the mid-1800s. So far as I know, there is ONLY ONE religious movement or church that has been around since the beginning of the Christian era to guide and inspire people and that church is known as the RCC.

I think the Orthodox and other apostolic churces that we recognize as having a valid priesthood and sacraments would also qualify for that statement, though as a Catholic I would say that they are defected in some small ways compared to the fullness of truth and guidance we have.

The Catholic Church would agree.  Our differences are relatively minor, and we consider them to bear the four marks of the true Church:  One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic.  We recognize them because they have never fallen into heresy.
