A few nights ago my grandmother asked me what "that little thing that looks like a tea pot" was for in Catholic services she'd seen on TV, so I told her and gave her a biblical basis for it, referencing both the Old Testament temple practices and the mention of censers being used in the Revelation.

Continuing to think about it, I looked up the topic in NewAdvent.org's Catholic Encyclopedia, and while it said that censers had been used since the Church's earliest days, it gave no more details.

Can anyone help fill in the historical blanks for me?

Thanks.
