God's peace.  I would like to know what happened to the Feast of the Circumcision of Christ, which falls on Jan. 1 but was not even mentioned in my church.  Instead, the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God took precedence.  My priest told me that the Feast of the Circumcision is not recognized by American Catholics.

Because it falls on the octave (eighth) day of Christmas, January first has been celebrated as a feast by the Church since the earliest days.  However it has been through several name changes.  It has been known as the Octave Day of Christmas, the Feast of the Circumcision, the Holy Name of Jesus, and most recently the Solemnity of Mary.  With the permission of the local ordinary, the World Day of Peace may also be celebrated.

The most recent designation came about as a result of the liturgical reforms mandated by Vatican II and implemented by Pope Paul VI.  Prior to this designation, there was no feast on the calendar to honor Mary herself.  We had the Annunciation, the Visitation, the Immaculate Conception, the Assumption, and various other feasts, but none that honored Mary herself;  nearly 5000 saints had feast days, but none for Mary, the Mother of God.  Pope Paul VI decided that the octave day of Christmas was an appropriate day to honor her, and so he placed the feast on the calendar.

The Circumcision is still celebrated as a feast in the Eastern Churches, but in most places it does not fall on January 1.  Orthodox Churches which still follow the Julian calendar celebrated Christmas on January 6th this year, so the Feast of the Circumcision will be next Saturday, January 13th.
