Hello Everyone,
Last night I watched Johnette Benkovic's program "The Abundant Life." She had two guests on (one a priest) who spoke about devotion to the sacred heart of Jesus. I was so captivated by this program and wanted to get involved with this devotion. However, the guests mentioned that in order to partake of this devotion, one has to have a priest come into their home and bless the sacramental of the heart of Jesus. In other words, it isn't a private devotion, but a social one.
Is it possible that one can privately be devoted to the heart of Jesus such as in my case, where the above situation wouldn't be possible because of my husband?
Also, are there other specific devotions within the Catholic faith that can bring us closer to Jesus? I already know about some of the specific devotions to Mary but I am particularly interested in devotions to our Lord Jesus.
Love in Christ,
Darlene

What you describe is the Enthronement of the Sacred Heart. This is only one way of practicing devotion to the Sacred Heart. Yes, you can practice this devotion in a private manner that does not involve the Enthronement. Why don’t you check out Pope Pius XII’s encyclical on devotion to the Sacred Heart, Haurietis Aquas?
Devotion to the Divine Mercy is another one you might want to investigate since, like the Sacred Heart devotion, it is based on the Incarnation and Christ’s humanity. St. Faustina Kowalska was given the responsibility to spearhead this devotion in the 1930s. Her Diary is powerful reading.

David,
Are there specific prayers that I can find which are directly connected to the Devotion of the Sacred Heart of Jesus?

I’ll provide you with a bit more than prayers. The following links cover a number of aspects of the devotion which you may wish to explore.

On the Catholic Pages link page, look down through the list for the words “Sacred Heart.” There are several links. I especially like the articles by Fr. William Most and Fr. John Hardon.
On the Salvation History link page, scroll down to the bottom to find those pertaining to the Sacred Heart.
