Well, the subject heading says it all.
Why is the Tabernacle locked? Would or could anyone steal Jesus? Surely He wouldn't allow it.

God gives us free will, and that includes the freedom to profane the Blessed Sacrament. Yes, people do steal and desecrate the Blessed Sacrament. Also, since the vessels holding it are often made of gold and jewel encrusted, they can be quite valuable when melted and sold.
It's a shame that it has to be that way. Our small church is usually locked because people break into the poor box and steal the money donated for the poor. Our neighboring parish has an adoration chapel that is open 24 hours a day, and it has been vandalized twice.

That is so sad!
Thankfully, I don't think our church has had any problems. Most people can't find it even if they are looking for it. It is tucked in a very quiet residential area.
But back to my question. Couldn't someone, if he were really intent, just take the entire Tabernacle?

Yes, but thieves tend to look for easy targets. Tabernacles are heavy (depending on the design) and are most likely bolted to the floor or altar. Ours is built-in, so the whole altar would have to be destroyed. Many parishes have security systems in place with cameras, alarms, etc., so it would be hard to take the entire tabernacle without being caught. It would be much easier to use a screwdriver and pry the door open since most locks are not very secure, but delay is the primary objective. Those with any faith at all will probably have so much guilt they'll go elsewhere, and those with no faith will look for easier targets.
