Beliefnet is not a Catholic web site.  It allows posts by people of all faiths with little or no moderation.  Catholic posters are routinely attacked.  The particular post you mention is no longer available.

I suggest purchasing one or more of the following:
  1. The Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church (ISBN 9781574557251)
  2. The Catechism of the Catholic Church (ISBN 9780829407723)
  3. United States Catholic Catechism for Adults (ISBN 9781574554502)
You can buy them from Amazon or elsewhere, through the links I've provided.

There are several good Catholic stores online.  I have several of them listed on my OYCI Resources list.  My own favorites are GetFed (because it sells at a discount) and Aquinas and More (because it has such a large selection).  However, I usually shop at my local religious book store in order to support them.  If I need something they don't have, they'll order it for me.

The official publications of the Church, available everywhere, are:
  • Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC)
  • United States Catholic Catechism for Adults (USCCA)
  • Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church
  • Companion to the Catechism of the Catholic Church
  • Study Guide for the United States Catholic Catechism for Adults
Of the five, the Compendium is the simplest.  It contains 598 questions and answers, with references to the full catechism.

The USCCA is more of a text book.  It is great for use in a classroom setting or for personal study.  The Study Guide (which I haven't seen yet) probably offers a method of guided study.

The CCC itself is intended as a compilation of Church teaching to be used as a reference and as a source for specific catechisms, such as the US Catholic Catechism for Adults. Every Catholic should have a copy available for reference, but it is not really a good teaching source in my opinion.  Using it for teaching is like teaching vocabulary from the dictionary, or history and science from an encyclopedia.  The Compendium and USCCA are more "readable" but the USCCA is best (again, in my opinion) as a learning source for Catholics and non-Catholics alike.  I believe it will quickly become the definitive text book for RCIA programs and other catechetical programs for adults (again, in my opinion).

The Companion to the CCC contains all of the information referenced in the CCC footnotes, including quotes from Scripture, the Fathers and Doctors of the Church, papal encyclicals, and conciliar documents.  It does not contain the entire works, only those portions that are referenced by the CCC.  It's a great resource for those who want to see just what are the foundations of Church teaching.

There are other books as well.  GetFed has 58 items in its "Catechisms" section including audio and computer versions of the CCC.  The CCC and Compendium are also available at the Vatican web site and elsewhere.

There are other good books available as well that are not technically "Catechisms" but are good learning resources.  A search at Amazon for "+catholic +catechism" lists 48 books including Catholicism for Dummies and The Complete Idiot's Guide to Catholicism, both of which are supposed to be very good.  I have not read them, so I can't personally recommend them.
