Hi all, I hope that you have been enjoying this wonderful Christmas season. I know I have. In fact, I have seen some of the Masses from Rome, and something occured to me that I was wanting to know. In the movie "Problem Child" there is a line there that states that a nun is a female preist, and I know that that is definately not true, so my question is, what is a nun and what is there purpose in the Catholic Church?

In my experience, nuns are one of the jobs of service in the Church. They work in a variety of areas but they do not perform Mass nor communion services. Personally, I think of them as female monks. Some of them work in medical services while other may serve in educational services, social services, etc. Our nun serves as the person in charge of the various instructional services (all levels) of our parish. I had a classmate who was getting her doctorate in educational administration. She was the administrator of the nearby Catholic school. They provide a wide range of support services.

Nuns and brothers are vowed religious.  They take vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience.  There are also religious priests who take the same vows but in addition are ordained for the priesthood.

As Cliff has mentioned, vowed religious are primarily in service ministries such as education, health care, etc., but also some are cloistered and live a life apart from the world in work and prayer.  There are also vowed religious who live in mixed communities with single people, married couples, and families, and vowed secular orders for people who choose to live in the world but seek the spirituality of a vowed life.

But one thing is absolutely certain: a nun is not a female priest!

I already knew that, I just was using that as an example of what a nun IS NOT!
