In Search of All Things Catholic – An Inverted Cross?

Does anyone know the reason for this inverted cross on the pontiff’s chair?

Could not it have been covered by a drape or cloth if made defective?

All things in Catholic images having significance, what is the meaning or understanding here?

Where does this sit in tradition, or is it now tradition, because it is historical?

Why is the cross up-side-down?

Catholic's believe that the Pope (B16) sits "upon the chair of Peter" (metaphorically speaking). Tradition tells us that Peter requested not to be crucified in the same manner as our Lord, and was instead crucified upside down. Thus where Christians use the cross to symbolize Christ we also use the inverted cross to symbolize the office of Peter

DrDave is correct.  Peter was crucified upside down, and so the inverted cross became the symbol of the See of Peter.

By the way, Andrew was crucified on an X-shaped cross.
