When I read to my 3 year old from her CHildren's Bible, I sing a song that goes with the story if I know one. The ones I know song for are her favorites. I have noticed that in her Faith formation materials for next year there are only a handful of Bible stories and no songs that tell the story. Do they do this on purpose as a deliberate doctrinal decision? Is it that culturally, this is not usually the Catholic style? or do they just presume the parents are taking care of this part and these take care of the Catholic distinctives?

It's certainly not doctrinal.  I think it's just a matter of that particular company not offering it.  Maybe others do.  Anyone have any ideas?

Hi Becky. One of the things that comes to mind is that only some publishers have song resources from which to draw. So it may well be a practical/legal matter. Since you have a need, you might try finding a separate resource that has musical material more or less matching what’s in the texts you will be using.

The Donut Man is a recent convert.  Our kids grew up on his Bible songs.  They're great!

The Bible actually contains songs!

If one studies the genres of Scriptural material, there are histories, hagiographies, biographies, poems, songs, mythologies, collections (eg Proverbs) ... even 'taunt songs' (to wind up one's enemies!)

Likewise in the New Testament we think hymns have been included in the Pauline epistles.

So yes ... songs have their place ... especially when you remember songs long after you remember prose (how many phone numbers can you recall ... now how many song lyrics ... ever sung along to a song you haven't heard since you were a kid?)

From what I've heard, angels love a good sing-song (not that I've heard them singing, you understand, but from what I've read, they seem to sing a lot).

I can't sing, sadly ... tone deaf ... so no angelic choir for me!

There was one very famous presbyter who worked the docks in old Alexandria — his 'genius' was in composing songs and poems for the sailors and fishermen to sing whilst doing their jobs, and they took to it with gusto!

(Actually infamous more than famous ... when the faithful noticed the words of the songs didn't quite match the words of the Baptismal confessions they had made they complained to their bishop ... the presbyter's name was Arius ... he was a lot of trouble!)
