I have been watching the re-run of the program on Fr. Solanus Casey (GREAT program, BTW). I know what a porter is on the train or a cruise ship. However, in the setting of a monastery, what is a porter or what are the duties of a porter in a monastery?

Cliff -

What is the program?  I wonder if it's available on DVD (we don't have cable)?

"Porter" is one of the minor orders on the path to ordination to the priesthood.  The minor orders have been supressed in the Latin Rite, except for Acolyte and Lector.  The major orders, deacon and priest, remain of course.  "Porter" specifically was charged with watching the door.  The role harkens back to the early days of the Church when liturgy was conducted in secret, and only catechumens and fully initiated Christians were allowed to participate, and the porter escorted the catechumens out at the end of the Mass of the Catechumens, now known as the Liturgy of the Word.

You can read about the minor orders in the Catholic Encyclopedia.

I believe the minor orders are still celebrated in the Eastern Rites.  Perhaps Pani Rose can comment further.

Thanks Rick. That makes sense in the light of the program.

Hi Marcee,

I don't remember the exact title of the program. I do remember that they said the program was available in DVD in the EWTN bookstore.

I just took a look over there. I entered his name and the DVDs came up. It looks like it cost $15. I am thinking of buying one to "share" with my older daughter who likes those kind of stories and shows a little interest in the Church.

Opps, sorry about that, Marcee. The $15 is the book price, the DVD price is $30 and they are out of them at the present. At least I think I have it straight now.
