The weekend of Dec. 7th-9th I will be at St. Meinrad for my first oblate retreat. The theme is "stability." I will learn a lot I am sure. There will be people from all over the country there.

The weather looks okay for travel too.:)

Benedictines make a promise of stability that is both physical and spiritual. I will be interested to find out how this relates to somebody who has had to change parishes already (and maybe again soon) and has moved around the country as much as I have in the journeyman phase of my career.

I had my first local chapter meeting in October. Wow, there are a lot of very good people there from whom I can learn a lot. It's good to have finally found a group that can make me stretch a little rather than having to concentrate on dumbing myself down all the time to suit this reverse snobbery thing that is popular around here.

A good book to read is "The Cloister Walk" by Kathleen Norris. She is a Presbyterian oblate from North Dakota.

I am sure Father Meinrad about died laughing when I mentioned in my application that my first interest in Benedictines came from reading the Cadfael novels in chronological order one winter. Or else he had a COW, I don't know which.:P

Annie, thanks for starting this new thread!

I would enjoy hearing more about what happened at the local chapter meeting. Did you have a series of lectures/discussions? Were you given a suggested reading list?

Don't forget to give us a detailed report after your retreat. I'm excited for you.

Every month novice oblates get in the mail a chapter about some aspect of being an oblate to put in the big ring binder they give you at your investiture. There are questions at the end you can answer if you want and mail them to Fr. Meinrad. He will reply if you write to him. You also get at your investiture another ring binder with two books in it about the history of the archabbey and the oblate program. And you get other Benedictine gear too. I love Catholic gear.

At the local meeting, which was in a meeting room at a Catholic-associated assisted living place, we had two investitures of newbies and an oblation by someone who had finished their novitiate and we prayed vespers followed by Mass and then Fr. Meinrad, who had driven up here for the meeting, gave a short talk on the concept of stability, which we are studying all this year. We then had some comments on 3 questions we were posed:

1. What does stability mean to you?

2. Why is it good for you?

3. Why is it hard for you?

There were some very intelligent comments on these questions.

And since this was my first chapter meeting I got to hug everybody along with the two people who just had their investitures.

Then we had SNACKS!

I think just being with others who are sharing the same endeavor in faithful living would be so helpful.  Like reading here on the forum of others who are going through the same things I did makes me think I'm not alone.  When I think of the word "stability" I think of something sturdy, not weak or wobbly.  It would be good for us to have stability when sudden trials or hardships come our way, but we must also have durability to last a long time with everyday use!  This must be a good soundingboard for you Annie.  :)

Regarding stability and instability--

I think my stability has increased as I have had to contend with instability. :?

I think the purpose of the instability is for us to develop stability. We are like kayaks, at first we feel we are going to tip over but then the secondary stability comes and later we say, well, that wasn't so bad. And when the next tippy wave comes we are better prepared.

Oh no, that was another Annieparable wasn't it?:P

I would appreciate your prayers too. I go down there against my better judgement because I haven't been feeling well for several months (long story). The drive is very easy though (only 4 1/2 hours) and I know I will feel better when I get there and make some new friends and see the friendly monks again.

Fr. Orthodox gave me the anointing of the sick on Thanksgiving/St. Cecilia's Day and I have felt a little better since then. It turns out they are also offering the anointing of the sick at the retreat. And boy, is that oil perfumey! I kept the handkerchief I used to wipe the oil off my hands for aromatherapy for a few days. *sniff* Ahhhhhhhhh...

I will pray for travel mercies for you Annie.  Four and a half hours is too much for me to drive now.  That's how long it takes me to drive to see the grandkids.  I can't go nearly as often as I used to.  Maybe on your drive back it will seem to go faster because you will have wonderful new things to think over!

Prayers go with you.

Be sure your cell is fully charged.

Have a warm hat and scarf and gloves and a blanket in the car.

Have a full tank of gas when you leave.

What else?  Oh, have a fabulous time!

God bless,

Becky

It is a long way for me too feeling so crummy but I will cheerfully be in denial the whole time.:)

Now they are saying it might snow, freezing rain so I will have to play it by ear.:X

I decided I wasn't up to driving 5 hours in this kind of weather. Maybe next time. Somebody else can have my snacks.
