"Hello?!"
Today was a truly beautiful day. It was hot and muggy and my wonderful spouse gave me continuous updates on what the TV was saying about those down south particularly hit hard by Katrina. I listened to a story of a woman who hung onto a tree limb for three hours and thought she was going to die. So, she prayed. I saw a man who lost his wife. She told him that he could not hang onto her any longer and to take care of the kids. He was crying. So, I prayed. Natural disasters always turn us all back to God. So, why was today a beautiful day? It was because of my cell phone.

My cell phone is necessary for business so that when I am out, I can keep track of what is happening. Other than that I have this habit that drives my kids nuts of not running to answer it. I am not a slave to my phone. So, there it was on the desk and there was my 4 year old at the desk. Pretty soon neither one of them was at the desk and for the next 6 hours life was beautiful.
I set my speed dial so that I can reach my family quickly when driving. Little Miss Trouble held down the 2 until it dialed. "Daddy!" That little half surprised voice that sing songs like Daddy answering the phone is the most incredible thing in the world. "Daddy, I love you."
A little while later the house phone rang. I answered.
"Hi, Mom. Did you need me?"
It was the oldest calling while on break from work.
"No."
"Well, my cell phone shows you called 3 times."
"Oh, it must have been your baby sister."
"Okay, well I love you see you when I get home."
She checked her voice mail and sure enough there was a little voice laughing and saying "I love you."
#3 daughter drove son to football practice. She is a new driver and got a bit flustered with the gear shift when her phone sounded the ring from Mom. Was she surprised when a little voice giggled and said "I love you."
#2 daughter called from the barracks after getting done for the day. "Mom, did you call?"
"No, it must have been your sister."
"Oh, I wondered why you had her leave the message on my voice mail."
"What did she say?"
"Hello? I love you."
We chatted a while.
After the call ended, the house phone rang. I answered it and this thrilled little voice said "Mom!!!!! When I push number 5, I get you Mom!! I love you!!!"
By the end of the day, everybody had gotten at least 6 or 7 "I love you." calls from a 4 year old. Thinking we had been trying to call caused us to exchange a lot of "I love you" calls between the rest of us. It was a beautiful day.

As I got ready to go to bed tonight, I wondered: If every one of us had a cell phone on which we could call God, would we behave like 4 year olds and call him over and over just to tell Him "I love you."? And would those type of calls result in a lot of people getting "I love you." messages from each other?
I wondered about the woman in the tree. Would she have called God often just to say "I love you." or just when she needed help getting out of a tree? I wondered about the man and wondered if he would call God to say "I love you." or just when he needed help finding his wife who was swept away in the water? And then I wondered how often he said "I love you." to her.
It was a beautiful day. The world can fall apart but there are "I love you." messages to be sent and received and I do have God's number: 1-800-555-PRAY. I think I will try to remember to be in faith as a little child and dial His number more often just to say: "Father!!!! I love you!!!!"
