WASHINGTON—The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops is offering a variety of multimedia resources to help Catholics reflect during the 2008 season of Lent, which begins on Ash Wednesday, February 6. Resources include a new series of “radio retreats” in English and Spanish featuring bishops as retreat leaders, and several versions of the Stations of the Cross, including a new audio version available for download, which is from the 2007 USCCB publication, Catholic Household Blessings & Prayers.
Resources on the special Web site (http://www.usccb.org/lent) are organized around four pillars of the United States Catholic Catechism for Adults: What we believe, what we celebrate, how we live, and how we pray. The site includes information on fasting and abstinence, examinations of conscience to aid preparation for the Sacrament of Penance, and a section on Holy Week observances. Resources are also structured to assist different user groups including families, parishes and youth.
The Lenten resources Web site was created by the USCCB Communications Department under the leadership of the Digital Media Office. Funding for the radio retreats, Stations of the Cross, readings podcasts and daily reflections is provided by the U.S. bishops’ Catholic Communication Campaign.
The radio retreats, which focus on the scripture readings for each Sunday in Lent, were produced for USCCB in association with Franciscan Radio and are also available to radio stations and networks. Host Elia Castillo opens each retreat with a greeting followed by a sung version of The Lord’s Prayer. Next the featured bishop presents his homily for the particular Lenten Sunday. The homily is followed by a meditative song and a question-and-answer segment with the bishop. The programs conclude with a wrap-up by the host and the bishop’s blessing. The bishop retreat leaders for the 2008 retreats are listed below.- Week 1 English: Cardinal Francis George, OMI of Chicago Spanish: Bishop Eusebio Elizondo, M.Sp.S., auxiliary bishop of Seattle, Washington
