Actress Patricia Heaton featured at Feminist for Life campus events next week
Emmy award winning television actress Patricia Heaton will be one of two high profile guests at Feminist for Life events planned at two Southern California campuses next week.
On Monday, April 16, at 7 p.m., Heaton is scheduled to join Feminists for Life president Serrin M. Foster at Pepperdine University in Malibu. On Tuesday, April 17 at 7 p.m., Heaton and Foster are scheduled to be at UCLA.
Pepperdine, in Malibu, is not open to the public. UCLA, in the Westwood area of Los Angeles, is open to the public – and the event is free. The UCLA event will be held in Room 100 of Moore Hall. The building houses the Graduate School of Education.
Heaton spoke at Pepperdine last fall. Her speech led to changes in university policy so that children and pregnant women can now live on campus. “In the past, our policy was that you had to draw the line somewhere,” Pepperdine dean of students Mark Davis told California Catholic Daily earlier this month. “So in the past, we didn’t offer any housing for our married students. A few years ago we opened it up for married students. Then last year, after Patricia Heaton came, concerns were raised by grad students who became pregnant while they were here, so we decided to revisit that policy and allow students to live on campus who had children.”
UCLA may prove more hostile territory than conservative Pepperdine. In January, the first edition of The Advocate, a quarterly pro-life campus magazine, published an exposé revealing that university health counselors advised a student reporter posing as an “accidentally pregnant” co-ed that it would be better to get an abortion than to have her baby.
Heaton, a star of the popular television series “Everybody Loves Raymond,” has long been one of the few openly pro-life personalities in Hollywood. “It will not be Barbra Streisand I’m standing in front of when I have to make an accounting of my life,” Heaton said on the Fox News program the O’Reilly Factor in 2002. During the same program, Heaton said, “The thing I found in Hollywood was that the Democrats were supposed to be all inclusive, but they weren't inclusive of my opinion.”
In January 2003, Heaton walked out of the American Music Awards in Los Angeles because of what she called “an onslaught of lewd jokes and off-color remarks.”
Heaton will be featured in a new Fox TV program this fall called “Action News.”
