My daughter is getting married in June and is hoping to use NFP, even though she's not Catholic.  (Yay!)  I don't know what to tell her as far as how to learn it.  Is a book enough, especially if she's unable to find classes in her area?  She's in Irvine, CA.

Any helpful advice for her out there???  I hope so!  Thank you.

Jill

It is a lot easier to take some classes or at least talk to instructors or another couple who have done it (esp. if there is significant "irregularity" of cycle). She should  contact the Couple to Couple League:

http://www.ccli.org/

The site has a search for geographical areas:

http://www.ccli.org/learn/tcsearch.php

Failing that, I would suggest asking them for a recommendation of a book, since they are up on all the best stuff in that area.

Thank you, Dave.  I'll give her the links.

I learned it long before being Catholic from reading a book on the recommendation of a Dr's wife(they weren't catholic either). So I would say yes. I also use the TCOYF software to chart. It has some frustrating quirks but it's overall a  good tool. I have never taken a class although I once emailed someone from the couple to couple league with a question.

Surely it's possible to learn it through books alone, but I know that it can be difficult and most people would probably need or at least benefit from that human assistance and encouragement. After all, it isn't easy (esp. in this day and age) to periodically abstain voluntarily from sexual relations, and so for many people (though there are always exceptions), talking to others who understand this and also practice it, is advisable.
