I wonder if anyone else read last week's Time Magazine article on romantic love called Why We Love? There is a paragraph in there that I find rather astounding, and that is that there is actual scientific evidence that use of the birth control pill may contribute to a woman's inability to pick a proper mate, thus leading to the tremendous increase in the divorce rate. It has to do with a genetic marker known as MHC. If a man and a woman have too-similar MHC markers, their chances of a miscarriage are greatly increased.
Women have the ability to sense similarities or differences in MHC. In controlled tests, women sniffed the T-shirts of men and invariably picked the T-shirts of the men who's MHC markers were most compatible with (that is, the most different from) their own.
Unless they were on the pill.
To quote the article:Precise as the MHC-detection system is, it can be confounded. One thing that throws us off the scent is the birth-control pill. Women who are on the Pill--which chemically simulates pregnancy--tend to choose wrong in the T-shirt test. When they discontinue the daily hormone dose, the protective smell mechanism kicks back in. "A colleague of mine wonders if the Pill may contribute to divorce," says [Charles] Wysocki [of the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia]. "Women pick a husband when they're on birth control, then quit to have a baby and realize they've made a mistake."
How many women choose a husband and end up divorcing while pregnant or soon after bearing a child? Or even if they stay together, it is "for the sake of the children" and is merely prolonging a doomed relationship?
Maybe God and the Church are right after all!!!

The online article is four pages long, and the section on contraception is in the middle of the second page.
And there is a link to email it to someone else. It's really an interesting article that covers the biological benefits of romance, and part of a collection of articles that examine, among other things, the way women manipulate men with that cute little head tilt and hair flip that every guy is a sucker for.
