I recently found out I was pregnant after 8 months of trying. Hurray!!!!Definitely a miracle from God as I am 40 years old. I am still very nervous as miscarriage is so common at my age.

I have never been both pregnant and Catholic and wondered if there is anything that I will have to do differently in the medical sense? In my 4 previous pregnancies I never had any genetic screening tests only the usual ultrasound about halfway through, are these forbidden now? Any other shots or tests on me forbidden? I usually get that RH shot since I am O neg and my husband is O pos. Can I still get it? What about anything during delivery? The dr I plan to use is goes to my church but I am not sure how orthodox she will be. I haven't called a dr yet anyway, as I am only 6 weeks along. I figured I would wait another month at least. Am I not bound by fasting or not eating meat now?

No.

No.

Genetic or other testing conducted to determine whether to abort the pregnancy should be avoided.  Otherwise, do what is best for you and your child.  (And congratulations, by the way!)

Yes, if it is medically necessary and in the best interests of you and your child.  No if it endangers you or your child unnecessarily.

What about anything during delivery?

You should probably avoid running marathons and climbing mountains and shouting obscenities, no matter how much you might hate your husband at that particular moment. :)

Place yourself and your child first.  If you can fast and abstain safely, do so.  Otherwise, do not.  Abstaining from meat really shouldn't be a problem, but follow your doctor's advice on nutrition.  Church law is secondary to your health and that of your child.  Of course, if you are unable to fast and abstain, you should substitute other forms of penance.

Fasting before the Eucharist should be less of a problem than the Lenten fast, but again, put your health and that of your child first.  If you find it necessary to eat a cracker during mass to prevent morning sickness, you may still receive communion.  The cracker in this case takes the form of medication.  However, you should not try to stretch it to an ice cream sundae during the homily, no matter what you might be craving!

(Down here, we have something we call snowballs which are similar to the snow cones and Italian ices available elsewhere, but of course a whole lot better.  I have thanked God since my daughter was born that we did not have a 24-hour snowball stand, or I would have been buying nectar cream snowballs day and night for nine months!)

You should also discuss with your doctor the advisability of consuming the Precious Blood at communion time.  I would recommend that you avoid the Precious Blood until you have had a chance to talk to your doctor about it.  If you do decide to consume the Precious Blood, you should take only the smallest possible sip.

Well, congratulations!

So far as I know, none of the procedures you mention is intrinsically immoral. The caution we sometimes hear about genetic screening has to do with people who are considering “sex selection” or birth defects. That is, if the child is the “wrong” sex or what they consider defective, they plan to abort. In other words, the test in itself is morally neutral, and the morality of having it done depends on one’s intent.

Pregnancy is not an illness, but a natural human function. Only if complications seem likely would one be exempt from abstinence from meat. Fasting would first depend on your general health. Diabetics, for instance, should not fast due to their body’s dependence on regular meals to maintain blood sugar within safe levels. Then, of course, there is the baby’s health. Here you might have a case, although health issues are not my area of expertise.
