It wasn't always this way in America and the UK, and still is not in many places of the world. See my articles:

English Protestant Penal Laws and Extraordinary Persecution of Catholics: 1559-1829

The Marvelous Religious Freedom of Catholics in "Reformation" Scotland (Up Till 1829)

English Protestant Persecution and Deprivation of the Religious Freedom of Irish Catholics: 1536-1829 and Beyond

Today Catholics are officially persecuted in China, Indonesia, India, Afghanistan, and Iran, and much of the Muslim world, and unofficially persecuted in Iraq and Turkey.  We are legally restricted even in such "enlightened" countries as England, where Catholics are prohibited from holding some public offices, and those in line for the throne must seek permission from the queen and renounce any claim to the throne in order to marry a Catholic.  Perhaps one of our English members could enlighten us on the current status of Prince Harry and Kate Middleton.

In certain areas of the Bible Belt there is still practical persecution of Catholics, but at least in most of the United States it is not a significant issue.  In fact, in Louisiana it's sometimes hard to get elected to public office if one is not Catholic!
