| I am putting my toes in the river Tiber a little deeper next week, as I plan on attending the Deep in History conference in OH. I will be driving there alone (8 hr trip) and would appreciate any prayers for safe travel and an insightful and uplifting time.

Many of us would love to go but can't. I hope you'll give us a full report when you return. Meanwhile we'll be praying for your safe journey.

I'm in Ohio Although not near where the conference appears to be. You should have a beautiful journey on your way here -- the leaves are in full color right now! I always think the drive is half the fun of the trip!
Prayers for a safe trip. Enjoy yourself, make sure you post back when it's all over about your favorite points

I will certainly keep you in my prayers... And hey, while you're there, look out for Msgr. Swetland. I believe he's speaking on Sunday. He's from my college. I think you'll enjoy him.

I hope your trip is enjoyable. Our Education Director goes every year and she loves it. One of these days I'm going to make it up there myself - or convince the powers that be to have a "Deep South In History" conference or something similar a little closer to home.
BTW, Jackson is a great little town. I bot my BA from Union.

Hello. I just returned late last night to Michigan, having attended the Fri. eve. & Sat. sessions of the conference in Columbus to which you refer. (Left a 16 year old "home alone" so didn't feel I could stay for 2 nights.) I hope you were as pleased with the conference as my husband and I were. I will say a prayer this afternoon for your safe journey back to TN. I am new to this forum. For some reason, I felt moved to reply to you as my first post.

| God's peace, Sally. I notice that you have had some experience with Unity and look forward to your relating something about it. I see their seagull sign on their meeting-place every time I drive down a road near my home and have always wondered about them. Blessings, ~Br_Carlo~

Br-Carlo, I see that you are currently online, so I'll take a quite minute to respond to your query about Unity. Unity began in the St. Louis, MO area just before the turn of the last century. Unity's founders were acquainted with Mary Baker Eddy, the founder of Christian Science, and the 2 movements have some similarities--the main one being a belief in the power of positive thinking to effect the outcomes of one's life situations. Both would be considered "New Thought" churches. (Not quite the same as "New Age" but also sharing some commonalities.) Unity has a "School of Practical Christianity" in Unity, MO, where its ministers are trained and ordained. Unity calls itself a Christian denomination, and uses the Bible as its scripture text. Unity's interpretations of the Bible are quite different from traditional Protestant Christianity and from Catholicism. Unity pretty much disregards the historical and moral framework of the Bible, looking only for what it calls "metaphysical" or hidden spiritual messages. The 12 Apostles, for example, are not studied as real men, but as being symbolic of 12 spiritual powers--all of which I have happily forgotten. Jesus is not seen as our savior and redeemer, but as our "Way-Shower". His resurrection would be seen in Unity as spiritual, not physical. In Unity we "pray" (it's really more of an Eastern kind of meditation) to be in touch with the Christ within us. According to Unity's teachings (as I received them), we all have an unrealized capacity to be Christs ourselves. We follow him and he will show us the "Way" to do this. Children's education in Unity (I taught Unity Sunday School for 4 years to elementary children) focuses on the positive stories in the Bible. Happy, happy, happy. Let's all hold hands and think positive thoughts. I loved Unity while I was active there. I believe to this day that God himself led me to Unity. (I could only take so much God at the time, and the good Lord knew just what kind of presentation of his person I would respond to.) God also led me out of Unity. I was at a point in my life where I experienced the deaths of quite a few family members and friends in a short period of time. Unity had no answers for suffering. You want answers about suffering? Nothing can provide more comfort than Catholic Christianity in that regard. Well, that's my over view of Unity. A good place to be for awhile. Good people. Well-meaning, well-intentioned. I wish them well, and pray for them on their journey.
Thanks for your interest.
Sally
