Greetings! This is Marcus Grodi, and as both the president / founder of the Coming Home Network International and the host for the Journey Home program on EWTN, I have volunteered to moderate this forum. I certainly appreciate all those who have helped with the forum in the past, and will do all I can to keep up with your discussions.

Since our server sometimes gets a bit full of archived discussions that are no longer active, one of the things our staff will be doing is deleting some of the old discussions, mostly those that were more initiated by an event or program in the past. If you miss an old topic, please feel free to start it up again.

The Journey Home program is broadcast Mondays at 8 p.m. ET and rebroadcast Tuesday at 1 a.m. and 10 a.m. ET, Wednesday at 1 p.m. ET, and Saturday at 11 p.m. ET on the EWTN satellite network. The audio portion as well as the complete program schedule is available on the EWTN Journey Home web site.

Questions for The Journey Home Program (during the broadcast) can be sent to journeyhome@ewtn.com.

Mr. Grodi,

This is a chance for me to thank you. Journey Home and the CHNI Forum were very important in my coming into the Catholic Church.

The kindness and humility you consistently show as host are a fine example for the rest of us.

May God continue to bless your ministries.

Mr. Grodi

I also would like to thank you for the wonderful work you do on The Journey Home, and on radio's Deep in Scripture.  Watching EWTN directly led me into the Catholic Church, and the Journey Home program was a huge part of that.  I cannot say enough good things about Mother Angelica, and the EWTN family.  To hear that you will be actively involved in the forum is truly exciting news!

Woo-hooooo!!! Welcome to the forum Marcus Grodi!!!!
It IS exciting to see that you will be here! I'm a lifelong Catholic and enjoy the Journey Home too. I learn all kinds of things about other denominations and beliefs, as well as Catholicism. A great reminder that I don't know everything... heh heh. I never cease to be impressed by those who search so sincerely and come Home. So many Catholics take their Faith for granted. This humbles me every time I see this on the Journey Home as well as on this forum.

Thank you so MUCH!!!!:D

Thank you all for your kind comments! I certainly won't be able to be vigilantly reading all comments all the time--and I also hope that my being the moderator won't squelch any of your discussions and critiques of the JH programs--but I will try to examine the dialogue daily.

Marcus,

Hi! I'm glad you'll be joining us here as moderator. It'll be nice to hear more from you. Just in case you didn't see my post on the thread about your beard (hey, I said you look distinguished! :D)... but anyway, I just want to reiterate that I really enjoy "The Journey Home" when I get a chance to watch it. As a cradle Catholic in a somewhat nominally Catholic parish with very little outreach or opportunities for spiritual growth, the Journey Home program really helps to give one hope!
Anyway... just glad that you're here! - and keep up the good work! God bless you!

P.S. Is that you milking the cow? Haven't done that myself in quite a few years! :D Ah, those were the days at my Grandma's place when I was still young...:)

I would love to have a DVD that includes all the roundtable discussions on the various denominations.  I have many Protestant friends who see flaws in their denominations and they are searching.  They think they can find a different denomination that will line up with what they already believe.  It woud be most helpful to them if I could hand them a resource that talks about many denominations at once.  I believe it would speed up their searches and I pray they will each and every one will find their way into the Catholic Church.  Please consider compiling such a DVD.  Thanks!

I also want to thank you for this show, it has cleared up many of my misconceptions of the Church, many of wich were drilled in my head during my tenure in Protestant land. I know all Protestants don't feel this way, but many I was around made the Catholic Church out to be evil, and since I was brought up Catholic, at times I would use Catholic termonology, that was usually met w/a stern rebuke! Your program has become one of my favorites on TV, just behind the old Twilight Zone! :D

The intent of the Roundtable discussions was in fact to provide a set of denominationally specific discussions just for the purpose you seek. This is in EWTN's prerogative, however, and I don't think, as of yet, they have packaged the programs as such. However, al of the Roundtables can be purchased from the EWTN Religious Catalogue.

Dear Marcus,

I love your show, and watch it when I can on the EWTN Netwerk here in Germany. Since its late night viewing, when I miss it I just download the audio of the EWTN website the next day.

I must have two years of your shows on my PDA, and listen to them on the way to work, which is an hours drive one way. Just enough time for one show.

If you ever plan to come to Germany, let me know and I'll put you up for the price of a good talk:D

God bless you!

Again, thank you all for your kind comments about the program. But certainly it's the guests and their sharing of what God has mercifully done in their lives that makes the program. I just try to keep out of their way. :)

Marcus,

I believe you are correct that there is a certain magic which happens when folks start sharing their conversion stories.  Suddenly, the dry doctrinal stuff becomes alive, personal and relevant.  I think this accounts, too, for the great success and influence of books like Rome to Home and Surprised by Truth (just to name a couple).

It seems to me a weakness of Catholicism that there is not a bigger place for testimonials and 1st person conversion stories.  Catholic Churches don't often seem to host the type of assemblies where this type of sharing can take place.  Testimonials, on the other hand, seem to be a staple in Evangelicalism.

As I watched last night's excellent show (unfortunately, I only caught the second half) the thought came to me that perhaps it is time for CHNI to create a companion show for JH; not to duplicate JH but to go more in-depth or approach the same issues from a different angle.

In network television, a show which appeals to a certain demographic is often thought of as a LEAD IN.  In my humble opinion, EWTN ought to capitalize on the JH demographic with a FOLLOW UP which would appeal to the same audience.

What type of show would serve as a companion piece to JH?  Perhaps something like "Deep in History" or "Deep in Scripture" which offered a fuller investigation of some of the issues which are often addressed in a passing or cursory way on JH.

I'm sure all of this sounds very presumptuous and there are folks at EWTN thinking about this sort of thing all of the time.  However, sometimes it can be hard to look at things from "outside the box" ...

Marcus,

I loved the program last night, although I unfortunately missed the first 10 minutes or so of it.  I didn't get your guest's name :-(

I was fascinated by the idea that Shakespeare was Catholic!!  I love Shakespeare; now I'm going to have to go back and reread his works to look for the Catholic reasoning :-)

One point that you and your guest discussed really resonated with me.  You said that some folks seem to see the guests on the show as being too "intellectual", or placing too much emphasis on what they learned that lead them to the Church.  You emphasized that whatever book they read or what they came across, it wasn't that book or that information that lead them to the Church -- it was the grace of faith given by the Holy Spirit.

I see the books, TV shows (like yours), even forums like this one as working to move obstacles out of the way in our minds and hearts.  Once we get rid of some of our obstacles, we are able to receive the grace of faith.

Keep up the good work, Marcus!!

Pax,

Ruth

ps:  Do you think you might feature another JW elder/Bethelite turned Catholic in the future?  I bet Jeff Schwehm could give you some names if you asked :-)

A quick question only somewhat on-topic -- does anyone else have problems with simultaneously broadcast spanish translation of the show?  The volume of the translation on the digital cable channel here in Richmond VA is such that the english can't be understood, and for this reason I usually, unfortunately, decide to skip it.  Maybe its just my television???

This is also often true of the Mass, but is not a service of every show.

Perplexed,

It sounds like you are receiving a SAP "second audio program" in Spanish on your television.  There should be an SAP switch on your TV which you can toggle to turn it off.

SAP is not included with every show but some special broadcasts.  I had the problem once on a Super Bowl broadcast and a houseful of guests.  We could not understand the broadcast because of the Spanish audio being received simultaneously, until we found the switch.

Hope this helps!

Ruth,

My cable company offers a DVD recorder that I use daily to record various EWTN programs. This is how I never miss a program when I am tied up doing something else. I just delete whatever program I've watched to make room for more of EWTN's programming.

Just a thought...

I have thought a lot about that after being on "The Journey Home" December 10th.

Instead of a theology based show though my thought was to have a "Life on the Rock" type show for adults.  It could be hosted by a Catholic couple, possibly converts or even a Catholic family with interviews of guests, a time for e-mails or call ins, entertainment possibly, and a segment about living out your Catholic faith with practical ideas on celebrating the liturgical year, popular devotion, and sacramentals.

I envision it as "a show for the whole family," maybe on a Friday night.   Just a thought.

"The Journey Home" is still the only show on TV we watch faithfully each week.  Thank you Marcus!

JH is "Must See TV" in our house as well.  If there was a companion show, which featured similar 1st person sharing and compelling conversion stories, I think we would continue to watch.

Personally, I like the Scott Hahn and Mike Aquilina shows which normally follow but their serious tones and deep theological themes are not normally accessible to my family.

Hi Marcus,

You do a good job of "getting out of the way" as you put it but you also add a lot to the program.  You are good at getting the guests to relax and at drawing their stories out with your questions and your encouragement.  You are also very gentle and welcoming.

I watch the Journey Home almost every week and have for a number of years now.  Thanks for your good work.

Howard

I am amazed at how many converts I meet who have gone through RCIA and yet never heard of the Journey Home or Coming Home Network.

We need to get the word out folks!  Perhaps we could each make contact with the RCIA team or Director in our Parish and let them know what a great resource this is ...

Once again, thank y'all for your kind words. PLease pass the word and tune in tonight. Our returning guest is Rob Evans, the DONUTMAN. He's become a good friend and he & his family have gone through many trials during their transition into the Catholic Church.

God Bless,

I loved the Donut Man.....I first met him in a local church here in Manahawkin NJ years ago.   The material was soo relatable and kid friendly. I am thrilled that he has come home.

I put the word out locally for some of my friends to watch as well.  I hope they can do so in charity.

Marcus, what a blessing you are to Christ's Church.  May you continue to move in God's grace.     J

Marcus,

In listening to the show last night, I didn't get a specific feel for the trials that Rob's family has been going through.  Then again, it's none of my business if he didn't want to share it.  He did mention having to move because of a family emergency which may be what you're referring to.

Either way, he is a brave man whom I respect very much.  The way he sung Bible songs to his kids is demonstrative of the type of fathers this society so desperately needs.

Love the show,

Ryan

Marcus,

Like everyone else here, I LOVE the show.  Having reverted alone (without my husband and four school age children), I would so appreciate hearing more specifics from converts who have had to cope with the stress, sadness, and pain of answering God's call to Catholicism while dealing with hostile family and friends. For many of us, this is the most difficult part of the journey home.

Thanks,

Dede
