It might be thought that in this southern tip of Texas, just a stone’s throw (literally) from Mexico, that just about everybody is Catholic. This is not the case. First, there are people from all over the world who have settled here, such as Hindus from India and Buddhists from Japan, not to mention a long list of Protestant denominations brought into the area by people from the northlands, such as Oklahoma and Georgia.
In addition, there are lots of non-religious people, and lots of Catholics who have jumped the fence into Evangelical and Pentecostal groups. But not all of them are content where they are. So we actually do have a reasonable number of converts and reverts each year.
Here is an article from the local daily newspaper (you can tell I don’t work there because of all the typos ) which give a little perspective on things religious down here in extreme southern Texas. It tells about two of the more than 500 converts and reverts who will be professing their faith this Easter Vigil in the Diocese of Brownsville.
St. Luke’s parish, built in 1968 with architecture and artwork to match, is where I was married, and it is where I currently participate in Perpetual Adoration. My own parish, Our Lady of Guadalupe, is a couple of miles south, in an older, much more Hispanic part of town. Eucharistic adoration is offered in my parish on Thursdays, but I am working at that time, so elected to join the other group.
