A coalition of pro-family groups calling itself “NotOurKids.com” is calling on parents to keep their children out of school on Wednesday, April 18, so they will not be forced to participate in the annual “Day of Silence” sponsored by the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN).

Thousands of schools across the country – including hundreds in California – are expected to participate in next week’s event. In previous years, some Catholic schools and universities have joined the campaign, and the same is expected this year. For example, at the University of San Diego, which purports to be a Catholic school, the campus pro-homosexual group PRIDE plans to provide free T-shirts for participants to wear. In addition, the group has invited “a transgendered speaker” to help commemorate the day.

Students and others participating in the event “will be quiet all day to protest the discrimination, harassment and abuse -- in effect, the silencing -- faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students and their allies in schools,” says a news release issued by GLSEN.

In 2006, more than 4,000 schools and colleges with over half a million students participated in the Day of Silence, according to the group. The pro-homosexual organization says the event includes kindergarten and elementary schools.

On its website, GLSEN provides a 20-page “Organizing Manual” for students, which includes information on how to win approval of school administrators, how to get media attention, and sample press releases.

In a press release, NotOurKids.com says school superintendents, principals, and faculty members “endorse, promote or allow” the Day of Silence, thereby “subjecting traditional students to pro-gay activism that violates their religious beliefs and right to a non-politicized education.”

“Teenagers deserve an opportunity to study English, history, math, and science -- without being subjected to pro-homosexual proselytizing sanctioned by school authorities,” said Linda Harvey of Mission America, a member of the NotOurKids coalition. “Students shouldn't be forced to self-censor or adopt beliefs contrary to those of their parents and places of worship. Even the strongest of our junior high and high school children are not equipped to serve as frontline soldiers in this culture war.”

The Mission America website offers this advice to parents: “How do you keep your kids home? Obviously, there are two options: (1) Inform the school of your intentions and reasons up front, or (2) Your child could discover he or she is sick that day. The political climate of many schools is enough to make most people sick, indeed. We highly, highly encourage number 1. This is the honest thing to do and would demonstrate moral courage to your children, neighbors, etc. In fact, you should explain to your kids why you are doing this...”
The above article is reposted from the California Catholic Daily.

First, before making a big scene, the parents should quietly find out if their child's school is participating in these pro-homosexual events.  Chances are (outside of California) the school staff are not involved and know nothing about it.

But, if that is going on at their child's school; then parents have an obligation to keep their child home from school and draft a civily worded letter to the school authorities (keep a copy) explaining that this agenda is a violation of their religious beliefs.

If recrimination follows from the school (i.e. disciplinary action against the student) then legal help should be obtained and the hearing process followed.

God's Blessings,

Thank God for homeschooling, and now Catholic school.  Although I'm a hs'er at heart, and miss my dd and learning with her terribly.  She's given me hope for next year, though!

Anyway, I'm thinking her school isn't participating in this today.
