GIULIANI AND CASEY:
MAKING LIFE DECISIONS

Catholic League president Bill Donohue commented today on presidential hopeful Rudolph Giuliani's recent statement on abortion, and Senator Bob Casey's position on embryonic stem cell research:

"Catholics who accept the teachings of the Catholic Church on the life issues have every reason to be angry with Rudy Giuliani's pledge to maintain taxpayer-funded abortions if elected president. His overall position on abortion is incoherent. He says he is now opposed to partial-birth abortion except to save the life of the mother, would appoint 'strict constructionist' judges and says he personally 'hates' abortion.

"Giuliani has no need to qualify his opposition to partial-birth abortion: the American Medical Association has determined that there is never a medical need for this type of abortion. Moreover, if he appoints the kinds of judges he says he will appoint, it is not likely they will uphold the wholly contrived right to abortion-on-demand. So why not simply say that Roe v. Wade invented a right that nowhere appears in the Constitution? And if he 'hates' abortion, what exactly is it that he hates about it? And why does he want to impose on the public the burden of paying for something that is constitutionally suspect and morally repugnant?

"When running for the senate seat in Pennsylvania, Casey would not commit on how he would vote on federally funded embryonic stem cell research. Now he says he's against it. This is good news. It makes it all the more difficult for him to later renege on his pro-life position on abortion, and thus should be welcomed by practicing Catholics in both parties.

"Catholics look to people like Giuliani and Casey to promote a culture of life. Giuliani's mixed signals are in need of repair. Casey is off to a good start."

What an interesting contrast between the quiet soft-spoken Senator Casey and the blowhard Rudy Guiliani who's done a wonderful job of plumbing the depths of moral relativism in politics, hands down!

I would've been more shocked if Guiliani changed his stripes on the twin issues of abortion and embryonic stem cell research. But my shock would only be mitigated by trying to comprehend his (and his much younger half's) already incomprehensible campaign tactics thus far.

If the so-called "Churchill of Manhattan" stepped on a mile-high stack of Bibles, Papal Encyclicals (dealing with sexual and political ethics) and copies of the Constitution and Federalist Papers, and swore his allegiance to the prolife side, I wouldn't believe him. This is a guy who wrecks marriages as fast as he calibrates his political chances based on which way the wind blows. He was shameless enough in his milking of 9/11 to even give (fleeting) thought to pulling the rug out of his (supposed) hand-picked successor, Michael Bloomberg, and running for mayor again.

It's interesting to see how efficiently NYC is continually operating without Mayor Rudy at the helm any longer. Wiser heads advised Rudy to stay out, and why not, there's a big fat cow in the talking motivational head circuit to milk. Believe me, it's not skim milk he's getting either.

This is a guy who received a lot of credit for reducing NYC's crime and making the streets safer. Maybe he did. More likely, the vast majority of good cops who would never sexually abuse a suspect in a police station (of all places!) or be so trigger happy so as to pummel a suspect who only tried to reach for his wallet, are the ones who deserve the credit. (Guiliani, Gotham's expert on leadership) could've cared less, save for some face-saving "damage control" measures to distance himself personally from the rogue officers. Meanwhile the rest of the police force became tarnished whilst "Rudy" received the lion's share of the credit for making Gotham's streets safer. He also got a lot of credit for putting the Mob on the ropes, he didn't do much to prevent the Russians and other ethnic groups from filling the Mafia's (relatively) empty limos.

If voters who are worried enough about President Bush's Patriot Act should wind up with Guiliani as president, they might as well say goodbye to the Constitution, for good. This man is so machiavellian that even Bill Clinton stands as a paragon of political virtue.

Of course, in this wonderful forum, I'm preaching to the choir because I doubt any serious Catholic or person interesting in converting, will vote for the "Churchill of Manhattan." But if my words offer anyone sufficient ammunition to help bury this man's political ambitions, it's time and effort well-spent.

I'm confident, however, that Guiliani won't get past the primaries. After all, if he can't raise more funds than the did-nothing Mitt Romney of Massachusetts, Guiliani's chances right now look fairly bleak. (Romney's not shy when it comes to being shameless, either - especially when it comes to conveniently and coincidently embracing unpopular socially conservative causes when it was safe to do so as a lame-duck.)

Once the word is out about the Real Rudy, and he keeps up his idiotic remarks about abortion to Southern (conservative) Republicans, we shouldn't worry about a Guiliani presidency. The American voters are much more intelligent than this Churchill poseur gives them credit for.

About the only positive thing I can say for him is that he's a Yankee fan.
(Ah, but I wonder what the Bronx Bombers' neighbors think of him. They'd probably vote for George Steinbrenner first.)

Should I'm proven wrong, well ... I'll be calling the Holy See's nearest consulate.

Dear Betty,

Thanks for your compliments! I try to keep it funny without being too sharp, unless, of course, my intended target is an incurably incorrigible politician who's never lived up to his constituents' higher expectations while never disappointing a cynic like myself looking for fresh examples of unrivaled lupine hypocrisy and crassness so as to rend such pol as beyond the pale.

That was rather circular, wasn't it? Sounds like Rudy Guiliani, too. The more I learn about Guiliani, such knowledge makes me feel a tiny tad bit more understanding for La Familiglia Gotti. Rest assured, such a stalwart Catholic pol like Rudy merits a good scorching now before, God Forbid!, he actually develops enough momentum to bag the GOP's nomination and ... Well!
We don't even want to think of that!

If the elephants are dumb enough to give Rudy the nomination, it shouldn't surprise anyone to see them flogging family values at the same time.

Whose values: The (ancient) Roman ruling class? That'll really give Bill Moyers more reasons to call the Republican Party the Guardians of Privilege, or Partying, Plunder, and/or take your pick.

I'd have a blog if only the darn things really pay off like they're cracked up to be doing. I let mine die on the vine of no returns. And, Lord alone knows how much time those things require for cross-referencing this, linking that, and pulling out my hair over lost copy due to forgetting to "save" every time I go to change the slightest thing. Having a blog sounded like a great way to finally achieve an old dream of becoming syndicated, with all the residual good feelings I'd have in return for putting our "leaders" on a daily "accountability" -- (hate that damn word!) -- scaffold or stake.

With so much competition pouring out of the colleges and think tanks with higher pedigrees, it didn't take long to realize I'd find it more rewarding trying to make money through making Christian art via wood. Even a college graduate with a double major in english lit and art theory* would grant that you don't need a degree in anything to create smiles, creches, crosses, and indoor birdhouses from a crowded basement shop.

Take care and have a wonderful weekend. For once, us weather beaten folks out east will find out what our Aprils used to be like before Al Gore turned up the heat in the atmosphere and messed up our winter with all his inconvenient and very fallible pontifications about Global Warming. I was wearing my winter coat just a few days ago!

* About as useful as my major: public administration/criminal justice. Ohhh, I never want to get back in that racket! It'd take Chuck Colson and the Pope to pull me back in that direction.
:D
