Los Angeles, Oct 30, 2007 / 01:08 pm (CNA).- Britney Spears is attempting to stir-up controversy with her new album “Blackout” by posing suggestively in a confessional with a priest. The Catholic League’s president of Media Relations, Kiera McCaffrey, has dismissed Britney’s antics as “cheap tricks” that won’t really influence people’s image of the Church.
Spears’ album photos show her leaning suggestively against a confessional wall while a “priest” listens to her sins. Another shows her sitting on the same “priest’s” lap clad in fishnet leggings.
When asked by CNA if she thought Britney’s marketing ploy would affect people’s perceptions of the Catholic Church, McCaffrey said “ No I certainly don’t think that people are going to think this happens in confessionals…and most people looking at this will think that she’s trying to just get attention.”
McCaffery characterized the pop star’s photos as a product of her personal life and bad advice from her record label: “it looks sad, it looks that this is a troubled girl, whose handlers are giving her this bright idea… and that is really no way to take care of somebody.”
Echoing earlier comments by Bill Donahue, she noted, “If everything were going well, not only in her personal life but in her career, this sort of thing wouldn’t be necessary. Britney Spears has certainly had hits before… and back before she had this crash…she didn’t need to resort to this kind of nonsense.”
Spears has garnered a lot of media attention during the last year. Most recently, she was stripped of all but monitored visitation with her two young sons after the presiding judge called her a "habitual" user of drugs and alcohol.

| It seems as if we are coming full circle with the persecution mentality of the Romans against the early Christians. Mockery is the coolest thing to do apparently if you're trying to make the tabloid covers and even the mainstream news. I was watching Hannity and Colmes on Fox about a week ago. They were discussing the incident in San Francisco when several gay militants dressed up as clown nuns and attended mass, even receiving the Holy Eucharist. As bad as that was, the panel on TV who talked about it didn't seem at all concerned that the church, and more specifically Our Lord Jesus Christ, had been violated. Hannity tried to explain what the Eucharist is to a catholic, and why it is such a sacrilige, but they weren't really listening, they were just laughing it off sort of as a prank. Now Brittney will get more news coverage for a few days, and the news pundits will say how sad it is to see her crash and burn this way, blah, blah, blah. Nothing about how sad it is to see an image of the catholic church ridiculed. And what did Jesus do when He was persecuted and mocked? I guess He was a lamb, He showed gentleness and strength with love. How hard it is to try and imitate Him.

Actually, the report I saw mentioned that Britney had descended even further, displayed another "clouded" crotch shot, showed her staggering out of a party, being stopped by police, mentioned that she was trying to emulate her "idol" Madonna, and fetured an interview with Bill Donohue of the Catholic League. (You can see a couple of the pictures and read Donohue's quote at the Catholic League web site. The report also contained an interview with a music critic saying that Britney's voice was so electronically processed that you really can't even tell it is her singing, and quoted a Washington newspaper in saying that she is becoming increasingly irrelevant.
I truly feel sorry for her. At one time we in Louisiana proudly pointed to her as a native of our state. Today she is a huge embarrassment. And unfortunately it seems her little sister is poised to follow in big sis's footsteps.
The people of Kentwood, Louisiana, remember Britney singing in church. Somehow I don't think that's happened in quite a while.
