Beijing, Nov 2, 2007 / 02:18 pm (CNA).- Organizes of the 2008 Olympics in Beijing have published a list of “prohibited objects” in the Olympic village where athletes will stay.  To the surprise of many, Bibles are among the objects that will not be allowed.

According to the Italian daily La Gazzetta dello Sport, organizers have cited “security reasons” and have prohibited athletes from bearing any kind of religious symbol at Olympic facilities.

Other objects on the list include video cameras and cups. The Spanish daily La Razon said the rule was one of a number of “signs of censure and intolerance” towards religious objects, particularly those used by Christians in China.  Currently in China five bishops and fifteen priests are in prison for opposing the official Church.

This is very sad.  I wonder if athletes will be prohibited from speaking about religion.  And does the ban on books include the Quran?  It would be interesting to see a Christian boycott, especially among top athletes, which would make the victory of the gold medal questionable.

I would be much more satisfied to see athletes making the Sign of the Cross at the finish line and on the medal stand.  We learned in 1980 and 1984 that the only thing boycotts do is hurt the athletes who have worked so hard and so long to earn the right to compete.

It would be much more effective if Christians would boycott products made in China this Christmas.  With all the recalls of Chinese products, that actually might happen.

My opinions on this might be ( probably are) contrary to everyone else's. I have lived in various Asian and African areas where a personal bible was banned- However my strongest testimony was my living my beliefs. Also the generation that will be at the Olympics appears to have personal headphones surgically attached to their ears:P that being said I have on my palm pilot a visual rosary that I can count the beads on along with the prayers as well as an audio rosary sung by Dana Scanlon I believe. I also have the daily readings and prayers. I personally would be less like to take a Bible anyhow due to needing all my suitcase space. Harder to give up would be the cross that I have worn most of my life usually under my clothes while I lived overseas but again the athletes probably don't wear jewelry anyhow

Have you been in Toys R' Us lately?  Try and find something that's not made in China.  I'm serious, go and take a look.  It's hopeless.  I was looking for a tea set, appropriate for a three year old.  Everyone I looked at was made in China.  So I looked at other toys, the Disney toys, they were all made in China.  We bought our grandson a Nascar jacket for his birthday.  It was made in China.  I don't know what we're making in America.  I think your suggestion that the athletes make the sign of the cross at the finish line is good.

Is it the officials in Beijing or officials from the IOC?  Can Beijing make that kind of blanket ban on personal items?  What is the track record for the IOC on religious matters?  Just wondering ...

Every athlete has to have a visa to enter the country, regardless of where the Olympics are held, so the host country is within its rights to make restrictions.  IMHO, banning religious objects is unreasonable, and I imagine there will be some repercussions from the IOC, but really the only thing they can do is take away the games.  That's highly unlikely since no other city is likely to be able to host such a massive event on very short notice.  I'm sure there will also be diplomatic pressure from other nations, but that hasn't bothered China very much in the past.

Rick,

Oh how sad this is.  My heart grieves in this.  I shall pray for the athletes and those who attend the Olympics.  They can try to ban bibles and religious stuff all they want to, but God will still be present and will make himself known.

I am so glad that God is in control and that His presence can be felt anywhere and at anytime.

My heartfelt prayers go to those imprisoned for the Faith.

  Thanks for posting this.

  Sincerely,

  Anne

I'm not surprised at all. We forsaw this and that was one of the 6,000 reasons why we didn't want them to get the Olympics, which is seen as an opportunity to show off their wonderful country. *gag*
