London, Nov. 8, 2007 (CWNews.com) - Former British prime minister Tony Blair may enter the Catholic Church within the next month, the London Daily Mail reports.
Citing an earlier story in the Catholic weekly The Tablet, the Daily Mail says that Blair planned to convert soon after leaving 10 Downing Street. A spokesman for the former prime minister said that report was "not without substance."
Blair's wife Cherie is Catholic, the couple's children have been raised in the Church, and for Tony Blair has regularly attended Mass with his family. Speculation about his possible conversion was intensified when he met with Pope Benedict XVI shortly before stepping down as prime minister.

| I know the royal family is not allowed to marry a catholic and still hold their position regarding the crown and being royal, but is it allowed for the prime minister to be a catholic? I would think not, but isn't that something he could have worked toward while he was in office?

My understanding is that the Prime Minister cannot be Catholic, or he would have converted a long time ago. There have been rumors for years that he would convert as soon as he left office. He has led the effort to repeal most of the laws restricting the place of Catholics in government. For example, I believe it is no longer illegal for a member of the royal family to marry a Catholic (or even to convert) if they are not in the line of succession or if they renounce their place. Of course, any family member must still gain the approval of the Queen to be married at all, but she recently (last year?) allowed a member of the family to be married at the Vatican!
