New York, Dec 4, 2007 / 12:07 pm (CNA).- A Protestant film company is releasing a movie that trivializes the Sacraments, dishonors the Virgin Mary, and depicts Catholic priests and nuns in a belittling fashion, says the Catholic League.

Gener8Xion, the studio that also created the movie One Night with the King, will release the film Noëlle on December 7.  Claiming to be “a parable of forgiveness and grace,” the movie features two laughable priests who are in love with the same woman.

The film company’s synopsis describes the character Jonathan Keene as “a young Catholic priest seemingly devoid of genuine human emotion” whose job is “to do what he does best: shut down a failing parish.”  The other clerical character is described as “the child-like Fr. Simeon Joyce, a faithful but disillusioned priest who blatantly disregards church regulations, uses church monies to pay an old fisherman’s medical bills and spends most of his time drinking at the local pub.”

“Both priests are portrayed as losers,” said Bill Donohue of the Catholic League.

Describing the plot, Donohue said the young priest, Father Joyce, only became a priest because he felt guilty for fathering a child by a woman and pressuring her to have an abortion.  Father Joyce tells Father Keene he wants to marry a woman named Marjorie so he can help raise her child, who was born out of wedlock.  “But Fr. Keene, a first-class klutz, is also in love with the same woman: he is shown bolting in the middle of Midnight Mass to be with her, knocking over a filled chalice and ripping off his vestments,” Donohue said.

Donohue summarized the Catholic League’s objections:  “Throughout the film, confession is trivialized, celibacy is ridiculed, the Virgin Mary is disrespected, nuns are belittled, last rites are mocked, and priestly vocations are caricatured. In short, that which is uniquely Catholic is trashed.”

But he also minimized the importance of Noëlle:  “the plot and the acting are so deliriously absurd that it is impossible for us to get too worked up about this flick.”Donohue suggested the filmmakers’ interest in dealing with hypocrisy should be directed towards stereotypes of misbehaving Protestant ministers, such as those who preach the so-called “Prosperity Gospel.”

Something that was not mentioned is the fact that Gener8Xion is a movie studio founded by and operated by TBN (Trinity Broadcast Network). Apparantly it is run by Matthew Crouch- the son of TBN's founder. In this season of celebrating the birth of our Savior, this must be their way of saying "Merry Christmas".

I would be saddened but not surprised if a secular film company had produced this trash.  But to hear that a religiously affiliated company, allegedly Christian, had produced it is shocking and really angers me.  I am appalled at what is being allowed in entertainment today.

What? No mention of Tim LaHaye? Looks like Satan didn't like the results of LaHaye's schlocky films so he's flogging a new horse. But like any sensible stable owner, he's entered two films this winter, this Noelle and the Golden Compass. Which one do the losers bet on, 666 or 666a?

I was more disturbed last night to see a portion of a show put on by CBS, that "Missing" (having a "senior moment" at the moment and the proper title seems temporarily missing as well) last night and it dealt with a "priest" in civies (dress shirt and tie, pants, too) trying to get it on with two young women.

Which is harder to combat, the movies or the television studio productions?

And, by the way, did any of these socially (dis) enlightened knuckleheads ever consider the rippling effects that such egregious and callous displays of sexual abuse might have on the people who were abused and will suffer for the rest of their lives because of what only a handful of bums, ordained or otherwise, did to them? Most people who suffer from the after-effects of childhood sexual abuse were not victims of priests and other clerics, but from family members, et al. This is nothing less than exploitational thuggery and piling on.

Shame on all of these "treacherous beyond excuse" producers.

Why should Satan put all his eggs in one basket when there are so many baskets to choose from?

They do carry some programming which it can be worthwhile and uplifting for Christians to view, however, they also carry some programming which, well, let's just say I would not watch it.  If I want to watch what is, in my opinion, truly Christian programming, I turn on EWTN.

I used to live down the street from the global headquarters of TBN.  The lights from the place truly lit up the sky (literally).  They go outrageous on everything from the exterior lights, to the interior sets to Jan Crouch's pink hair. Their electric bill must be out of control.

At least they run Life is Worth Living with Archbiship Sheen.  They do catch a lot of flack for that from evangelicals.

Wow, this film sounds like it would make "Nacho Libre" look good.

The Catholic Digest interview with the producer was very bland ... you could see him dodging the softballs at every turn.

I experienced a little bit of deja vu reading that interview, though. It reminded me a bit of the interviews with the folks behind "The Dead Sea Scrolls to the Bible in America" traveling exhibit a few years ago. "Why no, we're not anti-Catholic, we're just telling the truth." Well, the truth according to Loraine Boettner, anyway.

According to a web site that track box office receipts, Noelle only grossed abot $270K and was only playing for about three weeks

Films like this depict the ignorance of many anti-Catholics. I was once among that fold, now I thank God for His mercy in bringing me back home.

The real danger is that it will be around on DVD for years, promoted as a "Christian" film.

Hopefully by then, many more will be able to see just how ridiculous their representations were.

Smart-alecky as this might sound, if the DVD eventually goes "out of print" and then the current technology goes the way of VHS tape or the Beta, then "planned obsolescence" will have served us well ... ;)
