There seems to be a problem here in the states. The last March for Life rally in Washington, D.C. really got me thinking and reading some about the issue of abortion and the right to life. Had this been any other normal year I would have kept this in a spiritual and scriptural con- text. However, given that we are in a presidental election year I am real concerned.

In looking at the roster of candidates on both the Republican and Democrats parties, I have to think not just about the abortion debate, but all the other issues as well. The main issue that I am concerned about is the mess that President Bush got us into when he decided that we should add to our battles against Osama Ben Laden by also hutting down Saddam in Iraq. I am looking for one of two things:

1. That the troops get out of Iraq and start hunting for Bin Laden.

2. Start bringing our troops home. There is absolutely NO REASON why we should have troups in Iraq. We can sent half of those troups to Afganistan and bring everyone else home while at the same time turn Iraq over to UN peicekeeping forces.

Here is my point. I have been Republican for the better part of my voting life. After 9/11 I was still Republican, but as the war went on and we added Iraq to our hit list, I personally had to rethink my ideas on who the best party to leaad our country- and I am not just talking about the president, I am refering to members of Congress as well.

It distresses me to think that the Christians (and Catholics as well) atomatically wear an "I am a Christian Republican" button. How come it seems that ever since the 1960 camapign, all the Christians have supported the Republicans? Let's not forget that when the Supreme Court made abortion legal, we were under a Republican administration. We have had two Democrat administrations and five Republican administrations, and our country has not gotten any better. There are some things that are better, but there are other areas that still need changed like abortion, but when we are getting soldiers overseas that are being killed for a mation and a reason that we had no right being involved in, I think we have to put more issues on the front burner while putting these "Supreme Court issues" on the back burner- just until the Iraq and Afganistan issues can be fully and safely resolved.

Benedict -

The concerns in your post dovetail nicely with the recent statement by the U.S. Catholic Bishops - Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship: A Call to Political Responsibility from the Catholic Bishops of the United States  which was issued on November 14, 2007
The document is clear and well written, and if you haven't had a chance already, it's certainly worth the 15 minutes or so it takes to initially read through it.

You may also notice their deliberate sequence of priorities as listed in Section III Summary of Positions beginning with # 63, echoed throughout the document.

Thanks MG,

I have downloaded that document to my personal file on Catholic Documents that I keep. I guess that most of what I said is that it is hard for someone like me to seperate all the issues that I am conserned about and come at a conclusion for myself. To tell you the truth, the slate of Republicans does not stand out like someone say like a Ronald Regan. It seems that the slate represents a "weak list" of candidates (in my mind st least.)
