Have any of you heard about this? I have twice just today. Of course with an anti-Catholic spin
A couple things, though, do make me wonder
Also, this article I think has a specific list of the "new sins"

The new deadly sins that may lead to eternal damnation are polluting, genetic engineering, being obscenely rich, drug dealing, abortion, pedophilia and causing social injustice, The Times newspaper has reported.

I don't think there's anything really new and startling here. We've talked on this forum many times about social sins such as polluting the environment, supporting genocidal regimes, etc. New times and new technologies give new opportunity for sin, and new opportunities will tempt some beyond their desire to resist.
For example, cocaine has been around for a very long time, but crack cocaine is relatively new and much more highly addictive. It brings new opportunities for drug dealers to destroy the lives of younger and younger victims because it's cheaper and can cause addiction even on the first use. Drug dealers typically offer "samples" to young people to get them addicted, then take advantage of them by selling them drugs until their habit gets so severe they can no longer afford it, and they're forced into crime or prostitution to support their habit. And when they can't pay, the pushers drop them, leaving them to die and often releasing them on society where they will do what they must to get a fix, or be forced into incredibly expensive rehabilitation programs that have at best limited success. And the thought of "crack babies" is just too horrendous to ever forgive.
The drug dealers in these cases belong in the lowest reaches of hell. There is virtually no sin I can imagine that is worse, and there are no mitigating factors that would reduce culpability in my mind.
Knowingly and deliberately polluting the environment is not much better, and neither is abusing young innocents.
So basically what we have is one cardinal's listing of some of the more serious modern sins. They are certainly not "new" sins (in that their inclusion on a list doesn't "create" them as sins), and the listing does not worsen them, but it does show that the Vatican is concerned about modern advances in science and technology and how abuses can harm the planet and its inhabitants.

Catholic World News has an interesting take that you'll find here. We can't repost their articles, but the story's headline is quite informative:
The Forum: Not "new sins" but an old media blind spot
And the first paragraph indicates that the interviewee would be surprised to hear that his interview on the importance of confession was being reported as a list of new "deadly sins"!

Amen to that Cajunrick. My only area of "disagreement" regarding who's on the very lowest of Satan's food chain menu are the child molesters, and I need not go into some of my previously described possible nightmare descents into hell as a result from those bums. It just so happens that many of the young people who are so eager to allow themselves to get hooked on these drugs and the various parallel conveyor beltsl to hell, often come from hellish situations at "home" and crack gives them that "relief" that a love starved childhood and bums for "parents" couldn't even come close to affording them.
I'm also glad so see the Vatican take up the environment, including animal abuse. Lately while doing so research for a blog for exotic bird beginner klutzes like myself, I came across a few sites dealing with neglect and outright abuse of the most beautiful species of birds God Blessed us with and to be honest, if I was listening to a guy confess to these crimes, I can't say I wouldn't be tempted to give some extra impact penance.
You're right though: nothing new at all. It's telling us formally what we;'ve known informally for years. We have to be good stewards all around. Roma locutas est: But with a little more "clout" added to make sure the poi nt is gotten out.

And my only disagreement there is that drug dealers are destroying lives strictly for their own selfish gain, while most child molesters at least feel some remorse. Without real repentence, I trust in the depths of hell they will be fighting each other for the lowest level.

One of the first things I noticed about this story was that the words "new sins" were in quotation marks. "New sins" just sounds goofy, and most people (even people who actually read the story) will assume that the Vatican official Archbishop Gianfranco Girotti is being quoted here.
Not so.
Read it carefully and you'll find that the person being quoted is a REPORTER.
"Asked what he believed were today's 'new sins' ..."
Argh.

For a little perspective on this, I suggest reading the second blog entry from yesterday's Amy Welborn:
http://amywelborn.wordpress.com/2008/03/10/oh-and-on-luther/
The long and short of it is that a "newly revised list" of the seven deadly sins is a complete media fabrication. The Western media are notoriously sloppy and sensationalist in reporting about anything religious or Catholc...

And the perfect penance would be to unravel the spaghetti/macaroni and gordian knot-like mess the good guys, i.e. victims, will have to go through to get their machines back in workable condition.
They might also have to do more penance, in the form of long sentences, lost marriages, public shame, etc etc because a lot of that spam/scam and whatever else we want to call it, (STDs for computers) are related to porn and a whole host of other biggies.
What amazes me--no actually frightens me--is the extent to which these spammers have wormed their way throughout all aspects of the cyber and real world.
I have one other penance: make them listen to Al Gore go on and on and on and on about his contributions to fighting global warming and his "key" role in the invention of the internet. I'd rather take my chances in Dante's version of hell.

Cajunrick, I've known a few (forcibly) retired drug dealers and they've expressed remorse and turned their lives around. One of them came to his senses he said through reading Hebrews 12. But I hear ya about the real hard core dealers. They never get the picture because and that's because they simply don't want to: period. No pay off in being human.
But for the molesters, those guys only feign, and I mean feign, remorse and that's because they're afraid to get thrown in the clink yet again and they know what that means, over and over. But I don't feel the least sorry for them when I think of how many lives they've thoroughly messed up and yes, made available for the drug pushers. I do feel sorry for the folks who have to endure their immediate presence as "neighbors," to wit Long Beach, CA and Broward Co, FL (where a lot of them are living below overpasses because they can't find lodging. Hell, build a place far off in the 'Glades.) And, as for swampland in Louisiana,
Are the crocs a little hungry down your way? Now you gotta come up with some new emoticons to capture the essence of the times and yes, the kinds of penance we'd like to see dished out. Who'll be our Dante? s.
