Hi Everybody,
I just saw an article appearing in the Daily Hampshire Gazette of Northampton, MA about author Suzanne Strempek Shea's new book Sundays In America: A year long road trip in search of Christian faith. You've been linked directly to her home page, since alas, the Gazette is a pay-per-view newspaper. You can also find out about it at Amazon.com
Ms. Strempek-Shea is a local writer, who grew up in the Bondsville section of a sprawling and once very rural town of Belchertown where I had once served that town's weekly The Sentinel (84-85) as its news editor.
She's also authored several other books. (See Amazon.com)
Like so many Catholics in this country (and around the world, I'm sure) -- myself included -- she experienced a great sense of "homesickness" during the funeral of John Paul II. Although I might've missed a part in the interview indicating if she actually returned, I'll give her the benefit of the doubt that she had. And, no, I haven't read her book yet since this local article was the first time I've heard about it. But from the write up in the Gazette, her odyssey across the country should interest many forum members. No doubt a lot of you will find some bits and pieces of your own lives to compare notes with and look back upon. (Boy, I'm due for a confession for envy after reading about her ability to just be able to travel around and check things out. I'd almost, almost now, give my soul to be able to move around like that! Any tempting devils out there?)
Looks like a very interesting read. Trust me folks, she wasn't at all taken in by all that Lakewood Baptist charm. (Or should I've written oooze?)
Right "below the fold" and Strempek's article was an AP wire story by Hillary Rhodes * about Mark Driscoll one of the new type evangelical pastors based in Seattle, ("Mars Hill Church") I'm not all that familiar with the guy, but I've heard from another minister from that area that he's quite an "in-your-face" type of minister. Apparently he's effective enough for Campus Crusade for Christ based in Orlando (hmm, is that old stomping ground of mine becoming the East Coast Vatican for Evangelicals?)
* (I had to go all the way to Bryant Station TX to get this source!)
