For all those poor nuns who were burned out of their convent outside of Boston; for all our people hunted down by the Know-Nothings and Klan; for all the "No Irish & Dogs Need Apply" signs; for all the crap we put up with every election cycle and every time one of our lawyers gets appointed to a state or federal bench; people denied tenure; tax funds we couldn't qualify for just to make sure our kids got to and from our schools safely and all the snide innuendoes about our loyalty -- well, today's visit by Pope Benedict to the White House on his birthday, no less ... well, this makes if official, far more than JFK's win and the nominations by Al Smith and Kerry: even my real Irish pol hero Tip O'Neill would heartily agree!
We've really made it!
Too bad I didn't have a gyration tool to check the speed of all those old Yankees buried in the oldest of Hadley's boneyards next to my house. Some of those creaky old Puritan bones are 350 years old. Keep spinnin'
Whole lot of shakin' going on today!
Thank you Holy Father, and many Happy Birthdays ahead!
