This article provides an insightful analysis of this sad story about the refusal of excommunicated Bishop Bernard Fellay of the traditionalist organization Society of St. Pius X (SSPX), on the basis of “doctrinal error” by the Catholic Church, to even consider returning to good graces in the Catholic Church following Pope Benedict XVI’s Motu Proprio Summuorum Pontificum, establishing the traditional Latin Mass of 1962 as the Extraordinary Form of the Latin Rite and extending the right of priests to celebrate it.
I’m sure that the Vatican will keep trying, but this does appear to be the SSPX leadership’s final position, thus declaring their existence a definitive break on the basis of doctrine rather than a mere quarrel over forms of worship.

| This was in the cards from the beginning of the schism, unfortunately. It was never about the rite, it was about authority.

With the SSPX it is indeed a question of authority. It is however the assumed authority of the Lefebvre schismatic’s in open rebellion to the authority of St. Peter. The SSPX Bishops consider themselves an authority unto themselves. A position the will never give up as it will result in the loss of their autonomy which greatly conflicts with the fact that there is just no such thing as an autonomous Catholic!
This aside, as a lover of the Tridentine Mass, I cannot thank the SSPX enough for their efforts to preserve it. I will however not attend a Mass in a SSPX Church which I would consider support of their schism. It’s kind of a hurt that won’t go away.

Yup, authority issue fer shure. And if you read history, its an unfortunate repetition of other schismatics. This sort takes a perfectly good premise but use that premise as a basis for rebellion.
Robert, I too love the Tridentine Mass and know it very well. And you are right, LeFebvre did much to preserve what we enjoy today. Despite that, I will not go near the SSPX either.
Obedience is much more valuable than being "right".

I have been following this story for three years now. I think that it is time for Rome to formally declare SSPX schismatic and stop the dialog.
