"Bishop Morlino was attacked for exercising his fundamental rights of free speech and freedom of religion - in order to set an example that would chill the rights of others.  There were public calls for measures to silence Bishop Morlino using the type of sanctions that are now regularly applied to Catholic leaders and others in places like Canada and Massachusetts."  Dr. Matt Daniels

MADISON, WI - Dr. Matt Daniels, founder of the Alliance for Marriage (AFM), and Niger Innis, national spokesman for the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), stood together today to honor Bishop Robert C. Morlino with CORE's prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award.

The Award was presented today to Bishop Morlino at St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church in Madison, Wisconsin.  The award honored Bishop Morlino for resisting groups seeking to deprive him of his fundamental right -- as an American and as a Catholic leader -- to express support for a state constitutional amendment to protect marriage as a man and woman.

On November 8, Wisconsin joined 26 other states that have overwhelmingly approved marriage amendments to their state constitutions.

"Bishop Morlino was attacked for exercising his fundamental rights of free speech and freedom of religion - in order to set an example that would chill the rights of others," said Matt Daniels.  "There were public calls for measures to silence Bishop Morlino using the type of sanctions that are now regularly applied to Catholic leaders and others in places like Canada and Massachusetts."

In the weeks before voters in Wisconsin overwhelmingly backed the common-sense definition of marriage, a so-called "Watchdog Group" demanded the State of Wisconsin take action against the Diocese of Madison for the offense of distributing a pro-marriage amendment brochure to parishioners.  The brochure cited said "a yes vote upholds the Catholic teaching that marriage is a union between a man and a woman."

"Bishop Morlino's leadership is a brilliant star shining upon uncertain skies in the culture of America.  Catholics and non-Catholics alike can follow his leadership with great clarity and purpose. Unfortunately, the overwhelming themes on the minds of young people today are what "Little Kim" and "Paris Hilton" are wearing and not the many important issues facing our nation today.  Rather than looking to General Colin Powell or Speaker-Elect Nancy Pelosi for role models, many youth instead follow the exploits of rappers "50 Cent" and "Eminem".  One way to reverse these trends, and the complete domination of 'pop-culture,' is to follow Bishop Morlino's lead in prompting and securing the 'nuclear family' and all it entails." said Niger Innis.  "With all of society's ills and potential pitfalls, the foundation of marriage is the bedrock of security and guarantor of the full recognition of our human rights and civil rights."

Some of the past recipients of the Award include Nobel Laureate Elie Weisel, Secretary State James Baker, UN Secretary General Boutrus Ghali, Ambassador Ibrahim Gambari, UN Secretary General Javier Perez DeCuellar, and Actress Audrey Hepburn.

"Bishop Morlino stood up for the rights of all Americans -- both Catholics and non-Catholics -- to free speech, freedom of religion, and to public expression of their most deeply held convictions at a time when all of these freedoms are being challenged," added Dr. Daniels.
