Does anyone know more about this?  Apparently, two priests were interviewed in this film in front of the Vatican, where they mocked and ridiculed the teachings of the Catholic Church.  Basically, they were in agreement with Maher.

BTW, Maher is the son of a Jewish mother and Catholic father.  He was raised Catholic until his early teens.  He has trashed his Catholic upbringing and seeks to destroy all appearances of religion in society, regardless of what that religion may be.

I don't know about the priests but I think I saw part of a trailer on TV for the movie. Looked like it was at about the intellectual level of dumb and dumber. Still so disrespectful, my husband says Christians are the last group which it is still pc to mock.

We went to see "An American Carol" which opened the same night.  It's received mixed reviews, but I laughed 'til I cried!  Bill Maher is a bitter man, worthy of pity.  It's too bad.....

Take cheer folks. The news on the Maher front isn't all that bad. He just received a thumping in the Toronto Star which I caught earlier today. Here's the link and "portion thereof" for a good laugh.

Bill Maher's gentle attack on religion: Comedian says his religion-roasting doc is also a call-to-arms for rationalists

Raju Mudhar
Entertainment Reporter

A kinder, gentler Bill Maher? As unlikely as it seems, the comedian, late-night talk show host and political commentator doesn't really bear his fangs in his new film, Religulous, the just-opened comic documentary in which he attacks the rationality of religion. It's surprising to watch this outspoken man gently question people throughout this road trip of a movie, all the while respecting his targets' beliefs.

Concerning Maher's "fangs," this reporter never read Lewis' Screwtape Letters. (Maher never had to.)

Despite being known as argumentative, Maher says the Mr. Nice Guy tack wasn't too much of a stretch.

"I think that's just the way I am. I respect everybody as a person. I hate it when I read `Bill Maher hates Catholics,'" says Maher, who was raised Catholic. "I don't hate Catholics. I don't hate anybody. I always want to say to them, `I want to save you just like you want to save me. You think saving me involves getting into this nonsense, and I think saving you gets you out of it.' I'm not accusing them of hating me. You can feel that people are in need of enlightenment and love them."*

Ain't that just sweet. Bill's going to "enlighten" the rest of us uneducated proles. :roflol:

If there is a flaw in the film, it's that Maher doesn't take on people as smart as he is, often chatting with believers in theme parks or trucker chapels. Charles says he has 14 hours of additional material that includes more nuanced discussions with people like evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins, a well-known critic of creationism, which he plans to use in a TV series if the film is successful.

Mercy! Did that "entertainment critic" actually write, "If there is a flaw in the film, it's that Maher doesn't take on people as smart as he is, often chatting with believers in theme parks or trucker chapels." :roflmho:

This bare-fanged broad swipe of "believers in theme parks or trucker chapels" coming from a writer toiling in the lunatic asylum of any paper or electronic media: the so-called "entertainment" section.

At least we can count on Maher's flacks and water-carriers in the squirrel hatches of the 4th Estate to be funnier than Maher himself.

* emphasis mine.

Our local Lutheran pastor wrote about Bill Maher in a newspaper column this week.  Maher used deception in getting interviews, with his crew never using his name, and telling people that the title of the film was "A Spiritual Journey."  After the cameras were set up and rolling, Maher would show up.  He was quoted as saying, "Either they'd be seen on the camera leaving the interview and lose face or they'd have to talk to me."

Why am I not surprised that he uses deception and dishonesty as he tries to single-handedly destroy people's faith?

The pastor goes on to make a good point, though.  He says that Maher is right about one thing: "Christianity is irrational and absurd...to believe in a Triune God, who reveals Himself as Three Persons in One God and One God in Three Persons..." He goes on to list many irrational and absurd events from Christian history, including Noah and the flood, the parting of the Red Sea, and that God himself came down from heaven and was born of a Virgin and became Man.  He cites many of the miracles performed by Jesus and then says "it is especially irrational and absurd that this same Jesus rose from the tomb on the third day after being crucified, dead, and buried."
    He goes on to say "But to those who have been brought to saving faith by God through the power of His Holy Word and Sacraments, the Christian faith is undeniably true.  It is no longer irrational and absurd to them, for they know that nothing is impossible with the One, True God in Whom they believe."
    He concludes by saying that he understands that all of this is "just plain silly and downright ignorant to people like Maher.  So be it.  As it is written, 'the foolishness of God is wiser than men' (1 Cor. 1:25a).  For that reason, I'll continue to place my trust in the irrational, absurd, foolishness of God, through Whom I have been given forgivensss, life and salvation.  I hope and pray that you will, too."

St. Paul had to deal with the Bill Mahers of his day and had this to say:

16 Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit lives in you?
17 If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy him; for God's temple is sacred, and you are that temple.
18 Do not deceive yourselves. If any one of you thinks he is wise by the standards of this age, he should become a "fool" so that he may become wise.
19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God's sight. As it is written: "He catches the wise in their craftiness" ;
20 and again, "The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are futile."
21 So then, no more boasting about men! All things are yours,
22 whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or the present or the future--all are yours,
23 and you are of Christ, and Christ is of God. 1 Cor 3:16-23 (NIV)

Proverbs 1:20-33 (here in the ESV translation) always leaps to mind when I see one of these fools...

Wisdom cries aloud in the street,
in the markets she raises her voice;
at the head of the noisy streets she cries out;
at the entrance of the city gates she speaks:
“How long, O simple ones, will you love being simple?
How long will scoffers delight in their scoffing
and fools hate knowledge?
If you turn at my reproof,
behold, I will pour out my spirit to you;
I will make my words known to you.
Because I have called and you refused to listen,
have stretched out my hand and no one has heeded,
because you have ignored all my counsel
and would have none of my reproof,
I also will laugh at your calamity;
I will mock when terror strikes you,
when terror strikes you like a storm
and your calamity comes like a whirlwind,
when distress and anguish come upon you.
Then they will call upon me, but I will not answer;
they will seek me diligently but will not find me.
Because they hated knowledge
and did not choose the fear of the Lord,
would have none of my counsel
and despised all my reproof,
therefore they shall eat the fruit of their way,
and have their fill of their own devices.
For the simple are killed by their turning away,
and the complacency of fools destroys them;
but whoever listens to me will dwell secure
and will be at ease, without dread of disaster.”

Let us all pray that they turn their hearts to the Lord while they still can.
