London, Jan 15, 2007 / 03:28 pm (CNA).- A Catholic schoolgirl in England has been banned from wearing a crucifix in class, the school said the girl is prohibited from wearing the symbol for health and safety reasons.

Samantha Devine, a 13-year-old student at the nondenominational Robert Napier School in Gillingham, Kent, said she would continue wearing her necklace and silver crucifix, even if it meant being expelled.

According to The Telegraph, Paul Jackson, the deputy head at the secondary school, says that the school has a policy that no jewelry is to be worn by students in grades 7 to 10.

''The only exception to our uniform rule we would consider making is if the jewelry were an essential requirement of a particular religion," he reportedly said.

"I am proud of my religion and it is my right to wear a cross around my neck," Devine said. "I can't understand why the school thinks a tiny crucifix on a thin silver necklace is a health and safety hazard.

"Other religions are allowed to show their beliefs by wearing bracelets or turbans, so why can I not wear a cross to show my devotion to God?

The girl was reportedly told that she could wear a cross as a lapel badge.

Her father dismissed the request from the school as political correctness gone mad, reported Christian Today.

The human rights group Liberty has questioned whether there were any real health and safety implications over pupils wearing items of religious jewelry during standard lessons.

This incident comes not long after British Airways check-in worker Nadia Eweida took the airline to court to win the right to wear her chain and crucifix to work.

British Airways withdrew its controversial ban on workers wearing a visible cross, following widespread condemnation and international criticism.

Soon the PC nonsense will be making its way over the Atlantic into our neck of the woods.

Oh, it's already here.  I had a parent tell me not too long ago that her daughter was ordered to quit wearing a pro-life t-shirt because someone complained that it was offensive.  She immediately filed a complaint against every t-shirt anyone was wearing that bore any kind of profanity, sexual reference, drug reference, or demonic reference.  Her complaint is "under advisement" but meanwhile she's not allowed to wear her pro-life shirt.

Darlene,

Hey, woman! Where have you been??? :D As Rick says, it's already here! ...and we can thank the ACLU for a lot of it, IMHO
:X... though I suppose I might get some flack for casting aspersions on specific groups, but I plead the First Amendment - while we still have it, that is ;)...   (or do we? :?)

UPDATE:

School allows girl to wear ‘hidden’ crucifix

Birmingham, Jan 18, 2007 / 02:09 pm (CNA).- Administrators at Robert Napier School, who told a 13-year-old student last week she could not wear her necklace and crucifix for health and safety reasons, have changed their mind and said she could wear it as long as it remains hidden.

They also agreed to review the school policy on jewelry at the Jan.24th meeting of school governors.

These recent decisions were made after the parents of the Catholic girl, Samantha Devine, met with head teacher Fiona Miller on Monday.

According to Kent News, the girl’s mother, Rosemary Devine, said: “The school originally told us Sam was not allowed to wear the cross because it was a health and safety issue, but they have changed their mind and allowed her to wear it if it is kept hidden."

“I don’t want the school to completely change its rules, just amend them so everyone can wear a discreet religious symbol,” she said.

Last week, Samantha’s form teacher ordered her to remove the cross and necklace for health and safety reasons. She had been warned that if she continued to wear the jewelry she could face suspension or even expulsion from school.
