'Colonel Sanders' asks Pope for special sandwich blessing
KFC unveils fish sandwich for Lent, offers a sample to Benedict XVI
Louisville,KY, Feb 23, 2007 / 11:29 am (CNA).- The U.S. based Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) company, long known for its fast-food chicken is planning to sell fish for the first time and has asked for Pope Benedict XVI’s blessing.
For Lent this year the company is introducing a “Fish Snacker Sandwich,” and has sent a letter to the Holy Father, letting him know.
"This is the first time KFC has ever served fish nationally, and we believe that the new sandwich could make it easier and more affordable for Catholics to observe the tenets of their faith," KFC President Greg Dedrick wrote in a letter to the Pope earlier this month.
According to the AP, the letter asks the Holy Father for a special blessing and offers him a sample of the sandwich.
John O’Reilly, chief marketing officer for KFC said the sandwich was launched with Catholics in mind. Traditionally restaurant seafood sales go up during the Lenten Season, when Catholics abstain from meat on Fridays.
Laurie Schalow, a spokeswoman for KFC, told the AP that the Vatican confirmed receiving the letter and the company is hopeful for a response in the next week.
The sandwich is made of Alaskan pollock, the largest food fish resource in the world and a fish commonly used to make breaded and battered fish products.
KFC is owned by Yum Brands Inc. of Louisville, which also owns seafood outlet Long John Silver's. Schalow said the sandwich shouldn't put KFC and Long John Silver's at odds.
"The reason we decided to do this is our consumers showed an interest," Schalow said.
KFC, which has 5,500 restaurants around the country, test marketed the sandwich last year. The reviews were good, so the decision was made to sell the item nationally, Schalow said. The sandwich will remain on sale only during Lent, she said.

| I was out doing my grocery shopping today and the petsmart where I was buying pet food was right near a Five Guys Burgers and fries . Think inch thick burgers with any and every topping, like sauted mushrooms and onions and BBQ sauce. Usually I don't care if I eat meat but the smell was killing me today. I kept thinking so this must be where the pennance comes in.

Quiznos has a GREAT veggie sandwich.
Round Table has a GREAT veggie pizza
Mimi's has a GREAT veggie omlet.
I think I am hungry. OR maybe I should see a psych about my fixation on food.

But this Lent, I can't afford any of it. So far my "meatless" meals have been a can of onion soup with macaroni and cheese, a tuna sub, a slice of cheese pizza, and a big bowl of salad with a can of tuna.

Oh, I forgot about eating at home. Morning Star has some good meatless (soy I think) entrees and so does Amy's. They are both in the freezer section.

| While I grew up giving stuff up for Lent this is the first Lent that we have done the meatless Friday - routine- It takes a little planning- esp when the family doesn't really like fish! Wed. we had meatless lasanga- DH isn't fond of lasagna However our 16 y.o. son who has autism will eat it so.. on to tonight- the only fish available was catfish WHICH I HATE- so I cooked rice and curried lentils for our 14 y.o. daughter, son and I had left over lasanga and I cooked a ginger beef and green pepper dish for my husband who is not about to join the Catholic church ( yet)- I definitely have to plan my Friday menus better!!

Progresso makes a good French Onion soup that's low in calories and relatively low in sodium, and tastes really good (almost as good as my wife's homemade). Put a half slice of toasted bread and top that with grated Mozzerella cheese, and it's fabulous! It's made with beef broth, which is acceptable according to the guidelines.
I also happen to like fish sticks and tuna salad, so I'm really easy to please, and red beans and rice or white beans and rice is a Louisiana stable.
I'll start a thread on Lenten recipes and meal ideas in Fellowship Hall, where it's a more appropriate topic.
(And don't forget cheese pizza!)
