A lay woman, Alexandrina Maria da Costa was born in on March 30, 1904, in Balasar, Oporto, Portugal. At the age of 14, Alexandrina jumped out of a window to escape a rapist and was paralyzed from the neck down, and bed-ridden for the rest of her life. She was a mystic and a visionary, and a member of a lay order known as Salesian Cooperators. For the last 13 years of her life, she had the gift of inedia, surviving only on daily communion. She died on October 13, 1955, in her home town. She was declared venerable by Pope John Paul II on January 12, 1996, and beatified by him on April 25, 2004. Her case requires certification of an additional miracle before she can be canonized.
Information taken from the Catholic Forum, which includes a photograph of her.
