At the request of my protestant wife, I have just completed reading Phillip Yancey's book "Something Amazing About Grace". In general I think it was quite good and tended to parallel the Catholic ideas about God's Grace. However, I felt it was a little simplified and tended to waffle, but nothing that I could concretely put my finger on.

I noticed that there were a number of sly negative comments about Catholics, but he frequently quoted authors such as Thomas Merton and GK Chesterton without acknowledging their allegiance to Rome.

My question is - Has any body else read this book or any others by Yancey and what is your opinion of them and the author?

Joe

I read a review and "study guide" for the Yancey book, but have not had an opportunity to read the book itself.  Prematurely, on my part,  I am disposed to view the book as "nice" but superficial.  The content, as identified in the detailed review, looks like a lot of "opinion" books which may not be so scholarly as they are "fuzzy".   Usually, for me, the publishing house gives a clue to the books credibility.  I like to know, too, if the book is intended to be scholarly, persuasive, or just entertainment.  I can imagine the book might be a good "coffee table book" when the "ladies guild" come for tea.  (Now, I apologize for my premature opinion.  I betray the standard which I wish to impose upon Yancy.)

This is a great opportunity to return the favor.  You might want to give her a similar book by a Catholic author.

Woman of Grace: A Bible Study for Married Women (Paperback)
