Reading Vanessa's sweet posts, I saw this affirmation made concerning the UK moving toward a majority of Catholics. I would love to know more about this phenomenon. Can someone point me toward the source of the info?

Thanks a bunch in advance!

One place you'll find this information is the Catholic News Agency, as quoted in this thread in our "Religion in the News" topic area.

The Catholic faith is not yet in the majority in Great Britain, but the numbers are headed that way.  Anglican churches are largely empty and declining, while Catholic parishes in many areas are growing and thriving.  It is likely that Catholic church attendance will surpass Anglican church attendance in the very near future.

It is my understanding, from media, that the highest faith 'attendance'  in the UK is from the Muslim faith. Of course this may be wrong .

I am very happy that that Church is growing here, I just wouldn't like to give a false impression that it is by conversion, it is by many most welcome migrants from Eastern Europe.

I hear you, Vanessa. Thanks for the clarification. Where are they coming from, the Catholics?

I meant the UK Catholics, but I am curious about where you come from too!:D Are these Catholics refugees from somewhere specific, or is it a general increase in people moving to the UK? Where are you coming from?

I'm sorry, Hol, in my haste I interpreted 'where are they coming from?' in it's other sense!

The EU now comprises 27 countries and although work restrictions have been put upon certain countries because of 'fears' of an influx of people and immigration is a big political issue.

Nevertheless, a large number of people have come to live and work here, particularly in my area, in agriculture and hot houses. The Church has been very concerned and active in helping people, largely Catholics, who are being paid below the minimum wage and exploited. There is also trafficking in human life and the most vile exploitation.

I am very pro the EU, although I believe it is generally seen in a negative way in the US. I truly believe that it may be the saving of many impoverished Eastern European countries.

I hope that this is not interpreted as political, which it is not intended to be, but I do feel very passionate about the treatment received by many workers here, and it so happens that so many are Catholic and their attendance and faith is invigorating our Church. Their living here is the reason for my local Church needing to expand.

Vanessa,

(now decended from her high horse )

Hi!

No, not political at all. To me any way. I just hear your heart for the people.

I failed to notice (duh) that you are from the UK. I am very interested in what you shared; I've always had a special place in my heart for Eastern European countries. When we first got saved, 25 years ago, our desire was for missions work and that is the area that I focused on in my reading and stuff.

I would like to learn more about what is going on over there. Is there a website or news organization that I could check out to learn more?

Is there a language barrier for many of these people, the ones who have moved to your area? Have they come because the can get jobs, even though they are low paying? Does the UK have a minimum wage? Do they have access to health benefits and education? What countries do they tend to be from? Etc., etc., etc.

Thanks for sharing about these things.

I'm also interested in the growing Muslim presence there. What is that like? Is it creating a stir among the populace? Is there presence felt in particular ways? What would you say the ratio is between converts and immigrants? Are these people coming for the same reasons as the Catholics? Is there any kind of outreach to them?

I think you better point me to a website! ;)

Thanks,

Hollis
