Catholic Social Services handles the Catholic effort in my diocese. You can write or call:
Sr. Celeste Cotter
Catholic Social Services
1220 Aycock Street
Houma, LA 70360
985-876-0490
You can read about their services and check out their annual report at http://www.htdiocese.org/css/. When you write or call, be sure and mention my name.
The Archdiocese of New Orleans was particularly hard-hit by the storms, and is still struggling to reopen churches and schools. You can donate on thier web site at http://www.arch-no.org/. There's an address and a link on the top of their web page.
The Diocese of Lafayette, the Diocese of Lake Charles, and the Diocese of Biloxi were also extremely hard hit, and relief efforts are continuing there as well.
Donations to the Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, and other agencies help as well. If you want your donations earmarked to assist Louisiana and Mississippi, make sure they are encoded "Katrina Relief" or "2005 Hurricane Relief."
There are countless worthwhile causes. City Park in New Orleans is still struggling to survive. Their web site gives information on the damage they sustained and their needs. And you can find a whole lot more if you look. However, except for recognized charities like CRS or Catholic Charities, I would never donate to any organization without first checking them out with the Better Business Bureau's Give.org.
And if that's still not enough, you can always contact the local United Way and they'll find someone worthwhile who needs your donations.
