This gentleman, a 'distinguished theologian' from America is speaking at my local Anglican cathedral on Monday, on the subject 'Rethinking Heaven and Hell'.

I am planning to attend, it is an area that I find difficult. We have 'Churches Together' and people of all denominations attend.

I was just wondering if this name was familiar to any of you in the US?

Hello Vanessa,

If this is the same Dr. Sam Wells I've read about he is a Church of England Priest who last served in the U.K. as Vicar of St. Mark's Church (C. of E.) in Cambridge, England.

Since last August, (I think the date is correct) he has been the Dean at Duke Chapel, Duke Univesity in Durham, North Carolina, U.S.A. He and his wife teach in the Divinity School there.

Duke Univ. is a historically Methodist School, but more ecumenical now. The Duke tobacco money built the University. I have no idea as to Rev. Wells theology. I suspect, but am only guessing, that he is of a liberal bent. The title you list of his talk makes me a little suspicious that he leans in that direction. I may be wrong in this assumption, but I do not believe Duke would hire a conservative theologian. (At least my definition of conservative)

If you google his name you may be able to learn more about Dr. Wells.

Best Regards,

It is in a beautiful building, built from dedication to God.

and I would happily spend an hour or so there. It is valuable to me to hear all sorts of ideas and beliefs, I am just interested, and it is an opportunity to meet with other Christians and those of other faiths. Anyone who gives thought to these things really.

Hello Again Vanessa,

Lovely building. Is it 1,000 years old?

You do know it is stolen property, correct? Built by good English Catholics!

God's Blessings,

James, to be honest my knowledge is poor, I am well up for a little enlightenment.

A thousand years of prayers does seep into the very stone though, I believe.

I have a lot to learn also.

My English ancestors emigrated from Wapping, near the Thames - now East London. Their parish church was St. Dunstan's, which was built in the 900's. I visited there a few years ago. The names of priests who served there are mounted on plaques in the walls. The names go back to before surnames were in use.

I'm sure the interior was much more attractive before the "reformers" in the 17th century stripped the church interiors to get rid of all that "Popish" stuff.

It is in a very poor neighborhood, mostly east indians and Pakastani. Not many parishioners. A few years ago I and a number of Amerian cousins paid for a new carpet for the altar area. The Priest in charge thanked us, and then told us that they could really use a new roof.

Don't think we can afford to replace that old slate! Maybe if the C. of E. gave it back to the Catholics, they would have more parishioners. :)

Best regards,
