After hearing about Jerry Falwell's death this afternoon, I was wondering what his view of the Catholic Church was?

May he rest in peace...

I wondered the same thing, so I went googling.  I looked up "jerry falwell catholic".

Most of the sites I encountered were very anti-Catholic, and were condemning Falwell for his willingness to "deal with the devil".  Apparently Falwell considered Catholics as partners in his Moral Majority, which is 30% Catholic.  He spoke well of many Catholic leaders including cardinals and popes.  He has spoken at Catholic institutions, and Catholics have spoken at his bible college.  He has spoken highly of Catholic positions on moral issues, and on the Chuch's consistency of teaching in the moral arena.  Admittedly, I am recasting most of what I read that was decidedly negative into a positive light.

Of course, all of this was written before his death.  I have not yet seen anything in the Catholic or Christian media beyond the announcement of his death.

You'll find an example of the type of writing I encountered (one of the less vociferous ones) at http://www.cephasministry.com/evangelists_falwell.html.  Cephas Ministry is strongly anti-Catholic, so be warned!  It includes this statement, which serves as a summary of their opinion:

God has not called His people to listen to heretics; He has commanded that we reject them! For a supposed Fundamentalist [Falwell] to call the changes in Rome "positive" is evidence of overwhelming ignorance and blindness.

So apparently his view of the Catholic Church was positive enough to drive other fundamentalists to condemn him for it.

Thank you, Rick, for your quick response.

Requiem aeternam dona ei, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat ei. Requiescat in pace. Amen.  Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen.

In the days since Jerry Falwell passed away, he has taken a severe beating in the print and broadcast media.  Bill Maher, grnning ear to ear, celebrated Rev. Falwell's passing and said it was a shame Pat Robertson didn't go with him.  Christopher Hitchens, a columnist and contributor to CNN, wrote a book entitled "God is Not Great" and, on CNN, said it was a shame, "there is no Hell for Fallwell to go to."

Rev. Falwell has been described as a bigot and hatemonger.  Why?  Because he would not back down from his belief in the sanctity of human life and that God intended marriage to be between a man and a woman.

No matter how far along we are on our journey, whether we're just starting out on our Journey or are already home, we need to be aware that there are people who hate us because of our beliefs - and they're getting free reign in the media.

I live right next to Lynchburg(it is the nearest community with stores to me) and from what the news and radio stations here are acting like, they think Jerry Falwell was the fourth member of the trinity. I think the man did a lot of good but he wasn't perfect. In his earlier years, he was very narrow in his view of who was truly a chritstian, pentecostals were one of the groups that were going to Hell. There was also the incident when he announced that his employees at Liberty would have to tithe to him or lose their jobs, even if they attended a different church than his. As well, Liberty and Thomas road church are definitely business enterprises, the church even has a coffee shop and stores inside. He passed his church/business to his 2 sons, which is the exact situation that resulted in the Catholic church demanding priestly celebacy. Lynchburg has been here for centuries and will go on whether his cult of personality continues or not and it would not surpirse me at all to see the church fail without him as the charismatic leader holding it together.

I would just like to see some balance in the reporting. He was neither Satan nor God, just a man trying to do what he thought was right and benefit from it.

I don't disagree with anything you wrote.  My concern is that Bill Maher, Hitchens and others are gleefully celebrating his death because of his support for marriage and the sanctity of life.  Our society has degenerated to a point where it is now politically incorrect to take a stand against the murder of unborn babies and marriage for homosexuals.

People like Maher, Hitchens and their bretheren are increasing in number and are becoming more and more brazen in their verbal assaults on what used to be standard American values.  Hitchens gets a platform on CNN to shout, "There is no God" and to ridicule and show contempt for Jerry Falwell on the day of his funeral.

Consider how far we have fallen.  Rudy Ghouliani, the current GOP frontrunner, dresses in drag and cavorts with homosexuals in their annual Gay Pride parade in NYC.  He supports the murder of the unborn.
