Hi all,
I may be wrong, but can a Catholic attend an Orthodox church on a Sunday and still fulfill their Sunday obligation? I think if I recall, that we can go to their churches but they can't go to our churches (their rule, not ours).
I have been to alternative rites in full communion with Rome (Maronite, Melkite) but not to any of the Truly "Orthodox" churches (Greek, Coptic, Russian, et. al).
I would like to visit, and experience the liturgies, but need to know if I need to attend an "in full communion" mass to fulfill my obligation.
Or, am I wrong, and we look @ the Orthodox in the same light as Protestant churches when it comes to our Sunday obligation.
Thanks in advance,
Mea Maxima Culpa

No. We are only permitted to fulfill our obligation at an Orthodox church if there is no Catholic church available.

The Orthodox do not permit Catholics to receive Eucharist in an Orthodox church, and members of the Orthodox faiths are not permitted receive sacraments in a Catholic church, unless in danger of death. The Catholic Church permits Catholics to receive in an Orthodox church and Orthodox to receive in a Catholic church when no Catholic church is available.
However, the Orthodox do allow us to attend Divine Liturgy in their church; we just can't receive the sacraments according to their rule.
But you are correct that the restrictions come from the Orthodox end, not the Catholic end. The Catholic Church permits full intercommunion, but urges us to respect the discipline of the Orthodox faith.
