I think it is interesting to see that people have taken the Journey Home from a great variety of backgrounds. My own was Southern Baptist, and there have been many other types of Baptists. Also Presbyterian, Episcopalian, Reformed, Pentecostal, Church of Christ, Lutheran, Methodist, Orthodox,... I'm sure I left some out since there are more denominations every year.
There are also converts who have been Jewish and Muslim.
So, either by the poll above, or in a reply, where did you come from or what denomination are you still a part of as you explore the Catholic faith?
I seem to remember that Fr. Benedict Groeschel made the observation that many Baptist pastors are more inclined to recognize the truths held by the Catholic Church. My experience was that in college and especially seminary, when I studied Church History and Theology, it was obvious that the basic things we believe as any variety of Christians were originally worked out by councils of the Catholic Church. This knowledge is NOT common to the member in the pew.
The inclusion of Southern Baptist and Other Baptist is not meant to slight the varieties of Methodist and Presbyterian, not to mention the rainbow of Lutherans. Still, In my own outreach to my former brethren, I realize that there is a strong differentiation made between the two. Of course, that holds for all I mentioned, and is the reason we come to Rome to find unity.

I voted Lutheran and it says zero Lutherans. Will it show up later?
I'm not really Lutheran any more, but I'm not yet Catholic. What the heck am I???

Well Jill, you are and always were, a Christian. But I think it is quite important for us to realize that we cannot stand outside of being within the Church that is at the center of our faith, "the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church."
Many Lutherans, like Anglicans, want to see themselves as catholic, but that is standing off across the road when we really need to go where it is undeniably Catholic.
Don't worry, you'll get there.

| Yeah, technically I was a "United" Methodist. But, don't let the name fool you. They are on the verge of tearing in twain. My old pastor wasn't even surprised when he learned of my conversion. The Catholic Church is that fastest growing denomination for young adults, according to him.

I can't vote. Just a fallen away Catholic who spent less than a year in non-denom before finding my way home. And it was excruciating, as confused and dstrustful of RCC doctrines, as I was. I can't imagine what it was like for you all who actually were something different, before!

Hello Folks,
I just took the poll and checked "other" and was surprised to learn that it was the largest category here. Jill D, you crack me up! But I feel somewhat like you too. Sort of in suspended animation.
Of course, this poll is very limited in my estimation. I first accepted Christ in a para-church youth organization which was non-denominational and is now a bonified Cult. Next, I was part of a Pilgrim Holiness Church. Then I became a Wesleyan, which is an off-shoot of the Pilgrim Holiness Church and not as conservative. At that time, I attended a United Wesleyan College and became very familiar with their doctrine. One good thing is that they don't believe in eternal security. After that, I was part of the Assembles of God, which is Pentecostal. (They also didn't believe in eternal security) Then I became a member of a Reformed Baptist Church, and attended that the longest. Now, I am a member of a non-denominational church. Throughout all of my journey, I have been an Evangelical Christian. Now, how do you like that hodge-podge? Real diversity, eh?
God Bless You All,
Darlene

Darlene - I think you'll find there are many people with a resume similar to yours. I call myself "former Mennonite", but have stepped foot in a dozen or more other fundamentalist churches, including the United Pentecostal and Assembly of God (spent a few years here). I was raised in teh Christian Science cult and had input from JW and Mormon relatives.
From that mish mash of religion, I clung to One Holy God, The One who created Heaven and Earth. Later I picked up on the "Bible only" belief, but that one cracked.
God finally led me to the Roman Catholic Church. I'm home, finally. *Big sigh of relief*

I guess I haven't been as diverse as some, but in looking back I see that I was always looking for "the first century church." I started out in non-denominational churches at the age of 30! (Late start...) From there to an Ev Free church. That's when it all started. "Well," (so the argument went), "the first century first believers were Jewish and then the goyim were added and they hated the Jews so they destroyed the original form of worship and instituted pagan rituals like Christmas, etc." So, I went with Messianic Judaism for a bit. When holes began to appear in those arguments, we tried the home church route for a bit, just like in the first century when the believers met in HOMES...
Then I met a friend, Catholic, named Sharon and we used to walk 3 times a day for an hour a day. And she knew her faith! And we talked religion a LOT. And she lent me Scott Hahn's "Rome, Sweet Home." But my family wanted nothing to do with Catholicism, so we compromised at Lutheranism - Missouri Synod, quite conservative.
But I kept looking at Catholicism over a few years, a book here, an online course, various websites... Then a friend lent me Thomas Howard's "Lead Kindly Light" and George Wiegel's "Letters to a Young Catholic" and then a friend whose husband works at Catholic Answers found me and has sent me SO much great stuff and holds my hand every time I read or hear something that would take me off the path.
And now I'm headed right where I wanted to go in the first place: toward the first century Church! (Only took 15 years...... )
My family still doesn't want to go with me, but I can't not go. Fortunately, we do NOT have a basement.
(I think that line could become an "inside joke" around this forum! )

My dad's a founder and head elder of a non-denominational Bible Church with Plymouth Brethren influences. I was raised in, and attended that community through college.
As a teenager I was drawn to liturgy and ancient forms of worship through the writings of Thomas Howard and Frank Schaeffer.
When I got married and moved from home, I attended an Anglican parish for a year, all-the-while reading catholic apologetics and studying the Church's claimes.
I was received into the Church this past Summer on the feast of Sts. Peter and Paul.

Thanks for the votes from all of you. The poll will only take ten options, and as we all know, there are actually thousands of varieties fo christian groups out there. What I hoped for was a representation, and then the follow up dialogue. This lets us in the CHN and others who only view our forum see where we came from.
It is especially important t highlight that there are converts from these particlular backgrounds. Some denominational groups would insist that they would never have epople who would become Catholic. But, as one stated, Catholicism grows faster than all the others worldwide.
In fact, I attended a strategy conference at the Home Mission Board of the SOuthern Baptist Convention, (a mouthful) while a pastor, and a study cited showed that ONLY Roman Catholicism kept pace with the natural growth of the Houston area. Infact, it surpassed the population growth. No other denomination could do this. It struck me as a sign.
For instance, I ask pardon from Seventh Day Adventists, who I know are represented amonst us here, for not including them.

OK - I "othered" myself. By the way, my friend is pentacostal, too, and she does believe in eternal security. So confusing!

Hello Laura -
One of my biggest points of confusion was the confusion itself; I being rather like the "being tossed to and fro" of St. James.
When I discovered THE Church, established by CHrist Himself, clarity began to set in.
btw - I think we "others" are going to win in the poll. 8-)

RE:OTHERS "win" the poll
Ah, here 'tis the pollster himself, offering a little observation on the ongoing results. I certainly hope that the polling will continue for awhile, in order to get a broad sample of folks here.
AS to the OTHERS... well, that's religion today. One pastor described it as the supermarket of ideas, aisle upon aisle, with so amny choices, "how to decide?" Indeed, this great variety is not necessarily a sign of healthy diversity in American life. Instead, it is MY OPINION, (and a few others I have heard) that it shows the independent streak, the tendency to take sides, pcik up our ball and go play somewhere else, etc.
This is not a diatribe on "others," just a comment on how fractured the religious landscape has become.
I also Hope that some of those who do not post, but only read will give us an idea by polling what or where thier background is.
Grateful for the participation,
Monte ( it was fun to put a smiley here, is it a crown or crazy blue hair?)
